IMPORTANT: La Palma is a holiday destination so please book your accommodation well in advance, especially during peak periods such as Carnival (one week in February), Easter and Christmas when flights are heavily booked, and in July in years ending in 0 or 5 (when the Bajada de La Virgen, a big festival, takes place in Santa Cruz de La Palma). You can get the dates of the La Palma public holidays from the ING schedules (shown in green).

The Observatory's residence (called 'residencia' in Spanish) is operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). It is expected that you will make your own room and meal bookings previous to your departure to La Palma. Online forms and general information on the use of the residencia can be found at the IAC's residencia. Please note that no shops or ATMs are available on site.

Santa Cruz de La Palma (or just 'Santa Cruz') is the main town on La Palma, and it's where the ING sea-level office is situated. It takes 1 hour to reach Santa Cruz de La Palma from the observatory and 10 minutes from the airport. Los Cancajos (Breña Baja) is a beach resort between Santa Cruz de La Palma and the airport, and it's only at five minutes from both locations. See this map of La Palma for more information.
