Each semester, ~ 10 - 20 nights are allocated for service
observing (indicated in the schedule as 'S' nights) and ~ 10 - 25 nights for
quality control and commissioning
('D' = discretionary or 'Comm' =
commissioning nights).
Bright S/D/Comm nights are scheduled flexibly.
Whether they are used
for service observing, quality-control work or commissioning usually
depends on
observing conditions, the state of the service-observing queue,
and the urgency of the quality-control work.
Dark nights (or parts of nights) are used for service observing.
The numbers of nights actually used for discretionary/commissioning work
and
for service observing, for each semester from 1989B, are given below.
NB 'service' means science observations carried out in service mode,
i.e. including:
(1) service proposals;
(2) AO backup programmes;
(3) overrides, targets of opportunity.
