1. BIG NEWS: RGO COLLECTION OF ASTRONOMY JOURNALS GIVEN TO JOHN WHELAN
----------------------------------------------------------------------
LIBRARY ON INDEFINITE LOAN
--------------------------
Due to its closing, RGO put its excellent collection of astronomy journals
out to tender some months ago. Recently this collection has been awarded
to ING on indefinite loan. Furthermore it exits the possibility that we could
also get part of the book collection. At the moment we are discussing plans
about storing in order to offer the best service to library users. We would
like to kindly thank RGO for this loan.
2. ING DOCUMENTATION
--------------------
Ee have updated our tecnical note and manual collections which are in the
control rooms and libraries. There are two copies in each library: one copy
is bound and the other isn't, so it can be photocopied easily. The current
list of ING documents can be found at:
http://www.ing.iac.es/lpinfo/lpdocs.html
3. WHICH PERIODICALS DO WE STORE AND WHERE?
-------------------------------------------
Subsequently we show a list of our collections of periodicals (journals,
newsletters, annual reports, astronomy preprints and technical reports) we
store in each library. To search individual issues please use library's
on-line catalogue at: http://www.ing.iac.es/library/catalogue.html
I maintain updated lists of what you can find in each library roughly
at: http://www.ing.iac.es/library/INT_library.html and SLO_library.html

7. OTHER NEWS
-------------
INTRODUCING THE "JOURNAL OF ASTRONOMICAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE"
Following extensive discussions at the recent General Assembly of the IAU,
a research publication titled the "Journal of Astronomical History and
Heritage" is to be launched in 1998. This will go some way towards
providing an alternative outlet for those who liked to publish in the
"Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society" and in "Vistas in
Astronomy".
JAH2 will be published twice-yearly, in June and December, and will feature
review papers, research papers, short communications, and book reviews.
Papers on all aspects of astronomical history will be considered, including
studies which place the evolution of astronomy in political, economic and
cultural context. Papers on astronomical heritage may deal with historic
telescopes and observatories, conservation projects (including the
conversion of historic observatories into museums of astronomy), and
historical or industrial archaeological investigations of astronomical
sites and buildings. All papers will be refereed prior to publication.
DISTRIBUTION OF THE STOCKHOLM OBSERVATORY PREPRINT SERIES HAS CEASED
Mr Olofsson, head of the department of astronomy of Stockholm University has
informed us that the mail distribution of the Stockholm Observatory Preprint
Series has ceased. Now they can be accessed electronically via their
web-page at: http://www.astro.su.se/preprints.html
LISA III CONFERENCE
The LISA III Euroconference (Library and Information Services in Astronomy)
will be held in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) from 21 to 24 April. LISA III
is organised by IAC and it's entitled 'Managing Change Gracefully'. For more
information: http://www.iac.es/biblio/lisa/

approximate price, publisher, year of publication (or edition number) and
number of copies (if more than one, justify).
* To borrow books, fill out one of the loan cards which are on the library's
table. All the books can be borrowed except those ones at the INT library.
Put the loan card into one of the red plastic bags which are also on the
library's table and replace the book by the red bag. After reading, return
the book to the 'Returned Books' tray. Don't try to put it on the
shelves. You can borrow the book as long as you need it.
