OVERVIEW:
The John Whelan Library (JWL), established in 1985 and named after Cambridge's astronomer John Whelan
(QJRAS, 23, 460), is the library of the
Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING). It is particularly oriented to provide documentation services to the ING
staff and visiting astronomers. For a quick start, please visit the Users Quick Guide.
The JWL is split between
the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) and the sea level:
The JWL supports three other facilities at the INT:
LINKS WITH OTHER LIBRARIES:
The Nordic
Optical Telescope (NOT) is contributing towards the JWL.
There is another library at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory which is run by the
Swedish Solar
Telescope and it is dedicated to solar physics.
When the Royal Greenwich Observatory closed down in 1998, the John Whelan
Library was awarded with part of its collection of periodicals and books.
The Royal Greenwich Observatory Archives live at the Cambridge University
Library since then. In 2003 the JWL's collection of duplicates was donated to Biblioteca "José Pérez Vidal" of the Excmo. Cabildo Insular de La Palma.
The IAC Library in La Laguna, Tenerife, maintains strong links with the JWL, for instance, sharing some periodical subscriptions.
