3. JOURNAL DONATION FROM LEIDEN UNIVERSITY.
4. NEW ACQUISITIONS.
1. JOHN WHELAN LIBRARY IS NOW INDEPENDENT
-----------------------------------------
John Whelan Library has become completely independent from the RGO library.
Until recently our library was partially administered from Cambridge and
Ingrid Howard, RGO librarian, the contact in UK. But now these links have
been cut and John Whelan Library is independent. From these lines I would
like to thank Ingrid for her continous support on this library and her
kindly help since I began to work.
To order old papers we can still contact RGO library. Let me know or contact
Ingrid Howard (howard@ast.cam.ac.uk) directly. Once RGO is closed, then we
will have to contact IoA Library. You will be only charged for the
photocopies.
2. CD-ROMS NOW AVAILABLE
------------------------
Two sets of cabinets have been installed at the libraries in order to make
available our CD-ROM collection:
SLO LIBRARY
===========
At the SLO library you can find a Sparcstation (called Halifax) with a CD-Rom
reader and some CD-Rom cabinets next to it. On the cabinets you can find
handbooks, when available, on how to use some of the programes and CD-Roms.
If you borrow a CD-Rom or a diskette, please, replace it with a loan card
filled. These cabinets are always opened.
In general, to read a CD-Rom using the Sparc you have to type:
% volcheck -v
The following message is displayed: 'no media was found'. Ignore it. Then:
% cd /cdrom
To eject the CD-Rom:
% cd
% eject
Cabinets contain the following collections:
- The Digital Sky Survey. This consists of 102 CD-Roms covering the whole
sky. To read images, use the Sparc next to the cabinets. Follow this
procedure:
1. Login
2. Type 'getimage'. Then you will be given instructions on how to request a
field. Write a name, the center of the field and its size.
3. Getimage will display the following message: 'Could not find disc #'.
Look for disc # in the cabinets and put it into the CD-Rom reader. Then
type 'm' or 'M'. This will mount the disc. Probably you will have to try
several times until it's mounted.
4. Once getimage finds the requested image on the disc, it creates a fits
file. Abort getimage typing CTRL+d.
5. To read this fits file telnet to lpss20 and run IRAF (saotng) or ximtool.
6. Return discs to their location inside the cabinets.
Getimage was installed in this machine successfully thanks to Tony Povoas.
- The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues: 6 CD-ROMs. This is the output
catalogue of the Hipparcos mission. On the cabinets you will find Vol. 1 of
the printed version which can help you.
- The International Halley Watch (IHW): 24 CD-Roms. These are the large-scale
phenomena network (LSPN) imagery, the remote data from the IHW disciplines
and the spacecraft data of the international campaign of observations which
took place during the eighties.
- The American Astronomical Society (AAS) CD-Rom Series, from Vol. 1
(1993). This collection contains selected tabular data from The Astronomical
Journal, The Astrophysical Journal, The ApJ Supplement Series and Publications
of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
- Other astronomical catalogues, for example, the Hipparcos Input catalogue
and HICIS, The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Science Archive or the PGC-Rom
1992 (a catalogue of galaxies from the Observatoire de Lyon).
- CD-Roms which come with the journals displayed at the SLO library.
Some diskettes are also available like The Star Almanac for Land Surveyors
(1997) from the HM Nautical Almanac Office or PlanetView, a didactic programe.
INT LIBRARY
===========
The CD-Rom collection here is smaller. These cabinets' key is at Mavi's
office. There you can find:
- The AAS CD-Rom Series from Vol. 2 (1994).
- CD-Roms which come with the journals displayed at the INT library (for
example: Electrical Review or Personal Computer Magazine -in Dutch-).
Again, if you borrow a CD-Rom, please, replace it with a loan card filled.
3. JOURNALS FROM LEIDEN
-----------------------
The Observatory of Leiden University has donated 1,5 tons of journals to our
library recently. These journals are Astrophysical Journal and Astronomy and
Astrophysics mainly and complete our collections at the SLO library back to
the sixties. We wish to acknowledge such donation, specially to Dr. J. Lub,
who kindly contacted with us.
4. NEW ACQUISITIONS

The following books have arrived recently. If location is not specified, they
are on the New Acquisitons shelf at the SLO library and they can be borrowed
filling in the loan cards as usual:

* To order books, email me with this information: title, author, ISBN number,
approximate price, publisher, year of publication (or edition number) and
number of copies (if more than one, justify). Further information is
welcome too.
* To borrow books, fill in a loan card. In principle, all the books can be
borrowed. Put the loan card into the red plastic bag and leave it
where the book was exactly. Return the book to the 'Returned Books' tray.
