John Whelan Library Bulletin is issued at irregular intervals,
whenever there is important news from the library. Suggestions and
comments on this bulletin are welcome.
Note: The INT Library is the library on the first floor of the Isaac
Newton Telescope building and the SLO Library is located on the sixth
floor of Mayantigo building, the observatory's sea-level base in Santa
Cruz de La Palma. The SLO Library is split into a Book Library and a
Periodical Library both located on the same floor.

- 'Software Testing and Quality Engineering Magazine (STQE)' will
continue as 'Better Software' after 31 Dec 2003.
- 'Electro Optics'. New. Displayed at the INT Library.

INT Library.
- 'Embedded Systems Europe'. New. Displayed at the INT Library.

- The collection of duplicates of the John Whelan Library was donated
to Biblioteca "Jose Perez Vidal" of the Excmo. Cabildo Insular de La
Palma. More information can be found at this web page:

- The SPIE Digital Library includes approximately 70,000 full-text
papers from SPIE Journals and Proceedings published since 1998. It
also includes citations and abstracts for most SPIE papers published
since 1995. Plans are underway to expand the Digital Library back to
1990 by the end of 2004, an archive of nearly 200,000 papers.
Approximately 15,000 new papers will be added each year. John Whelan
Library has subscribed to 1-year access (50 papers) to SPIE Digital
Library (see
http://www.ing.iac.es/ds/library/showentry.php?&entryflag=periodical&id=685
for access information). The SPIE Digital Library includes:
- Proceedings of SPIE: starting at Volume 3245 (1998)
- Optical Engineering: starting at Volume 37 (1998)
- Journal of Electronic Imaging: starting at Volume 7 (1998)

GOLD RULES FOR LIBRARY USERS
1. NONE of the items at the INT Library or the SLO Periodical Library
can be borrowed.
2. ALL items at the SLO Book Library can be borrowed expect those
labeled as 'NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY' or 'FOR REFERENCE'.
3. If, after having a look at a book, you don't know where to put it
back just leave it in the RETURNED BOOKS trays at the SLO Book Library.
4. NEVER take away a book without filling in a LOAN CARD.
5. NEVER place a filled loan card on the shelves. Leave it in the
FILLED LOAN CARDS mailbox at the SLO Book Library instead. Books must
be returned within one year.
6. NEVER return a book to the shelves, even if you know the right
place. Leave it in the RETURNED BOOKS trays at the SLO Book Library
instead.
7. NEVER take away the books in the RETURNED BOOKS trays.
