John Whelan Library (JWL) Bulletin is issued at irregular intervals, whenever
there is important news at the library. Suggestions and comments on this
bulletin are welcome.
Note: The INT Library is the library on the first floor of the Isaac Newton
Telescope building and the SLO Library is on the sixth floor of Mayantigo
building, the observatory's sea-level base.

1. STATUS OF THE LIBRARY EXPANSION AT SEA-LEVEL
-----------------------------------------------
At the moment we are assembling the new shelves in both libraries. Once we
finish and the boxes containing the RGO loan are made available at La Grama
store, we will begin to move the journals first and then the books from La
Grama to the SLO and INT libraries. We expect to have the first journals on
the sixth floor library by the end of the current month. To complete a work
currently being done, we will move Nature and Sky and Telescope first. Please
let me know if you have any other priorities. Once again we apologise for the
inconveniences.
2. SUBSCRIPTIONS NEWS
---------------------
- 'Subaru Telescope's preprints' have started to arrive. They are displayed
at the SLO library with the other preprints.
- 'El profesional de la informacion', so far displayed at sea-level, was
stopped.
3. NEW ACQUISITIONS
-------------------
The following books have arrived recently. If location isn't specified,
they are on the New Acquisitions shelf in the SLO library. If the book is
part of the TNG contribution towards the library, then it's indicated. All
of them can be borrowed as usual unless they are placed in a non-borrowing
section.
1. 'Asymmetries in Spiral Galaxies [PhD Thesis]', R.H.M. Schoenmakers, 1999.
2. 'Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars - IAU Sym Vol. 191', T. Le Bertre et al
(editors), ASP, 1999.

SUPPORTING STAFF
Chris Johnson helped in the library during May and June. We thank Chris for
her assistance. Sebastian Sanchez will cover some of my duties as a librarian
while I am away. Daniel Bramich, one of our summer students, has been
working on the periodicals catalogue at the SLO library.
ZENIT AND SKY & TELESCOPE MAGAZINES
'Zenit' will be displayed and stored at sea-level from now on. We have
ordered a second copy of Sky & Telescope to allow simultaneous display at
sea-level and on the mountain. This is the only journal for which we are
paying 2 copies.

* To order books, email this information to me: title, author, ISBN number,
approximate price, publisher, year of publication (or edition) and
number of copies (if more than one, please, justify). Also specify which
account you wish to be charged, library or any other.
* To borrow books, fill out one of the loan cards which are on the library's
table. All the books can be borrowed except those at the INT library.
Put the loan card into one of the red plastic bags, which are also on the
library's table, and replace the book by the red bag. After reading,
return the book to the 'Returned Books' tray. Don't try to put it on the
shelves. You can borrow the book as long as you need it.
