1. PLANNING THE RGO INDEFINITE LOAN AVAILABILITY
------------------------------------------------

Books and journals on indefinite loan from the Mike Penston library,
the former RGO library, arrived in La Palma in mid-November. A total of
530 boxes were received and placed in the new La Grama store. Most of these
items will be moved to the sixth floor of Mayatingo building, for which we
are planning to make use of the space occupied now by the social area, and
move this to the current library space. These plans are now under discussion
and we will take the definite decision begining with the next financial year.

Sample lists of the received items can be found at
http://www.ing.iac.es/~library/RGOloan/. Please cofigure your browser to
read pdf files. There you will find the list of journals and two lists
(out of 11) of books.

2. NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS AND CANCELLATIONS
--------------------------------------

- 'Electronics Manufacturing'. Displayed at the INT library.
- 'Astronomy Reports'. Displayed at the SLO Library.
- 'Baltic Astronomy'. Displayed at the SLO Library.
- 'CPN - Europe'. The leading European Source for Computer & Networking
Products. Displayed at the INT Library.
- 'The Economist'. Cancelled in December 1998.
- In order to save money we have killed the very expensive duplicate
subscriptions displayed at the INT library: ApJ, ApJ Letters, ApJ
Suppl. Series, A&A, A&A Suppl. Series, A&A Review, PASP, MNRAS and Nature.
The latest issues of these journals are now fully available on Internet and
the library provides access to them through the virtual library at
http://www.ing.iac.es/library/links.html. MNRAS papers and Nature aren't
still on the web but both editors have announced the launch of the
electronic versions for next January.

3. DONATIONS

splendid 'Dictionary of Astronomy', on 8 Oct.

* To order books, email this information to me: title, author, ISBN number,
approximate price, publisher, year of publication (or edition) and
number of copies (if more than one, please, justify). Also specify which
account you wish to be charged, library or any other.
* To borrow books, fill out one of the loan cards which are on the library's

Put the loan card into one of the red plastic bags, which are also on the
library's table, and replace the book by the red bag. After reading,
return the book to the 'Returned Books' tray. Don't try to put it on the
shelves. You can borrow the book as long as you need it.
