John Whelan Library (JWL) Bulletin is issued at irregular intervals, whenever
there is important news at the library. Suggestions and comments on this
bulletin are welcome.
Note: INT Library is the library on the first floor of the Isaac Newton
Telescope building and SLO Library is on the sixth floor of the sea-level
base.

1. THE BOOK CATALOGUE IS NOW COMPLETE
-------------------------------------
The book catalogue (an ascii file called book.cat) is now complete and
updated. This catalogue was began by Don Pollaco and recently one of our
summer students, Fiona Riddick, has made big progress on it.
The file contains entries for almanacks, atlases, volumes belonging to
book series, catalogues, CD-Roms, dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias,
ephemerids, manuals, table and data books, text books, and similar
publications in both libraries and in every control room. In total there are
2270 entries. This figure doesn't represent the total number of books and
CD-Roms we have, and it's only a lower limit. For instance, there is an entry
for the Britannica Encyclopedia but not for every volume. The catalogue is
available at http://www.ing.iac.es/library/catalogue.html or at ~library/pub
on lpss1 or lpss2.ing.iac.es and it can be scanned following the
instructions in the library web pages.
In the future there will be a web interface to make searches quicker than now.

FREE ACCESS TO ARI - Bibliographical Data Base for Astronomical References
The ARI Bibliographical Data Base for Astronomical References (ARIBIB) is now
freely available in the Internet to subscribers of the printed bibliography
'Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts' like our library. This is the link:

THE FIELD 'TOPOGRAPHIC SIGNATURE' IN THE LOAN CARDS
Recently some people have been in trouble with the field 'Topographic
Signature' in the loan cards. This field refers to the labelled signature on
the cover or on the back of the books. This signature usually consists of a
number plus a 3-letter word or two words. Please, fill this field correctly
next time you borrow a book.

* To order books, email this information to me: title, author, ISBN number,
approximate price, publisher, year of publication (or edition) and
number of copies (if more than one, please, justify). Also specify which
account you wish to be charged.
* To borrow books, fill out one of the loan cards which are on the library's
table. All the books can be borrowed except those at the INT library.
Put the loan card into one of the red plastic bags, which are also on the
library's table, and replace the book by the red bag. After reading,
return the book to the 'Returned Books' tray. Don't try to put it on the
shelves. You can borrow the book as long as you need it.
