WEAVE LIFU (Large Integral-field Unit)

WEAVE's Large Integral-Field Unit (LIFU) provides spectroscopy over a hexagonal field of view 90 arcsec x 78 arcsec.

The main science array comprises 547 fibres, each having a diameter on the sky of 2.6 arcsec. Each fibre yields one spectrum on the WEAVE (blue-arm and red-arm) science detectors. The spectroscopic resolution is R ~ 2500 with the low-resolution VPHs, and R ~ 10000 with the high-resolution VPHs.

The LIFU mode of WEAVE was commissioned in early 2023, and survey and open-time LIFU science observations began in October 2023.

Information about applying for open-time observations (33% of the total WEAVE time on the telescope) can be found here.
