Con suma tristeza comunicamos que Rebeca Galera, astrónoma de soporte del Grupo Isaac Newton (ING), falleció el 11 de junio en La Palma tras una súbita enfermedad. Había sido ingresada en el Hospital General de La Palma pocos días antes.
Natural de La Puebla de Don Fadrique, Granada, había cursado la licenciatura en la Universidad de Granada. Actualmente estaba finalizando su tesis doctoral, que versa sobre el descubrimiento y la caracterización de nebulosas planetarias fuera de la Vía Láctea, en las galaxias del Grupo Local M31 y M33 y la Nube Grande de Magallanes. Tesis bajo la dirección de los profesores Antonio Mampaso y Romano Corradi (IAC/ULL) y fuertemente ligada al Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos al incluir observaciones que ella realizó en GTC, WHT e INT, además de en otros telescopios como el VLT.
Rebeca se había unido al ING dentro del programa de estudiantes 2019/20. Con pasión por su investigación y por abrir horizontes, había realizado estancias en Estados Unidos, Italia y Polonia, en colaboraciones que auguraban un prometedor futuro profesional.
A su familia astronómica del ING, del IAC y de la comunidad del Roque de los Muchachos, especialmente sus colegas estudiantes, nos queda el recuerdo de su personalidad agradable, su amistad y su gran sentido del humor. Sentimos el dolor de su partida y la tragedia de una prometedora vida truncada demasiado pronto y mandamos nuestro sentido pésame a sus padres, hermanos y allegados. Rebeca estará por siempre en los corazones de todos los que hemos tenido la suerte de compartir tiempo con ella.

With great sadness, we report that Rebeca Galera, support astronomer
at the Isaac Newton Group (ING), died on June 11 on La Palma after a
sudden illness. She had been admitted to the main Hospital of La
Palma a few days earlier.
Born in La Puebla de Don Fadrique, in Granada, she completed a
Bachelor's degree at the University of Granada. She was currently
finishing her doctoral thesis, about the discovery and
characterisation of planetary nebulae outside the Milky Way galaxy, in
the Local-Group galaxies M31 and M33 and the Large Magellanic
Cloud. Her thesis work was supervised by professors Antonio Mampaso
and Romano Corradi (IAC / ULL) and was strongly linked to the Roque de
los Muchachos Observatory by including observations she made with GTC,
WHT and INT, in addition to those she made at other telescopes such as
the VLT.
Rebeca had joined ING under the 2019/20 student programme. With a
passion for her research and for broadening her horizons, she had
worked in the United States, Italy and Poland, in collaborations that
augured a promising professional future.
Her astronomical family at ING, IAC and the Roque de los Muchachos,
and especially her fellow students, are left with memories of her
sympathetic personality, her friendship and her great sense of
humour. We feel the pain of her departure and the tragedy of a
promising life cut short too soon, and we send our condolences to
her parents, brothers and friends. Rebeca will forever be in the hearts of those of
us who have been fortunate to share time with her.
