John Whelan Library Liasons and Memberships

Liason with other libraries

The John Whelan Library (JWL) kept strong links with the RGO library in the 80's and the 90's. The JWL was awarded with part of the RGO's collection of periodicals and books when it closed down in 1998. The RGO Archives live at the Cambridge University Library since then.

In 2003 the JWL's collection of duplicates was donated to the Biblioteca "José Pérez Vidal" of the Excmo. Cabildo Insular de La Palma.

The following organisations have made contributions to the operation of the JWL:

The nearest library is actually located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. It is run by the Swedish Solar Telescope and it is dedicated to solar physics.

The IAC Library in La Laguna, Tenerife, maintains strong links with the JWL. Learn more about this here: M. Gómez, 2010, "IAC Library: Some Challenges", ASP Conference Series, 433, 47.

Library membership

The JWL is operated by the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes, which is owned by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which is one of the Research Councils UK (RCUK). The JWL has joined the consortium of libraries RESCOLINC for the supply of books and periodicals (stay informed with the STFC Libraries twitter). The RCUK has developed a policy for Open Access publishing.
