William Herschel
Telescope
2D-FIS
First light: 1994.
Last commissioning:
Participating organisations:
Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias.
Description:
The 2D-FIS system is a bundle of 125 optical fibres distributed in the focal
plane of the telescope in a central rectangle, covering an area of about 9.2
arcseconds×12.2 arcseconds on the sky, and an outer ring of fibres at
38.4 arcseconds from the center, to measure the sky background light. The 95
inner fibres have a core diameter of 0.9 arcseconds. These fibres are then
fed into the slit of the ISIS double-beam spectrograph, so that the
gratings, filters and dichroics of ISIS can be used.
