ING's Position Statement on STFC's 16 December Press Release

ING web news release
21 December, 2009

The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) are pleased to note that the announcement made by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) on December 16th, 2009, clarifies the continued role of STFC as owner and manager of the ING until the expiration of the International Agreements for the Canarian Observatories. These agreements are for renewal in 2012.

I am also pleased that STFC will investigate with its ING partners changes to ownership and managerial arrangements that may allow the operation of our telescopes beyond 2012.

The ING would like to thank its user communities from the UK, the Netherlands and Spain for their continued interest in our telescopes. We share the concerns of UK astronomers regarding the impact that financial cuts will have on the vitality of astronomical research, and wish to reassure the ING communities that our plans remain to develop our telescopes at El Roque de los Muchachos, to keep them at the forefront of 4-m class telescopes throughout the next decade.

With best wishes for the new year,

Marc Balcells
Director of ING

La Situación del ING en el Plan Estratégico de la Astronomía Británica

ING web news release

Marc Balcells Comas
Director del ING
