On the afternoon of Friday August 21 a forest fire started in Garafía, in the north of La Palma, at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level, some 6 km north of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM).
Although observations continued as normal that night, staff and observers were evacuated at noon the following day, following the emergency plan of the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) under smooth coordination of the Observatory Administration.
The La Palma town and island councils, the Canary Islands regional government and several Spanish ministries coordinated their response to the fire, bringing over 400 firefighters and 11 aircrafts to the area within 24 hours, including two military emergency units, and three planes and several brigades coming from the Spanish mainland.
Thanks to this effective response, the fire was declared under control by
the evening of Monday 24th, and science observations at ORM resumed on the night of August 25.
The prevailing winds from the south, while preventing the fire from approaching
the observatory, pushed the fire toward the neighbouring populated areas of Las
Tricias and Santo Domingo de Garafía, where houses and vehicles were destroyed
but no people or livestock were harmed.
The ING personnel wish to join IAC and other international institutions at ORM in expressing their solidarity with those who have
been affected by this fire and their sincere thanks to those who brought
the fire under control so rapidly.

Forest Fire in the North of La Palma
En la tarde del 21 de agosto se originó en Garafía, norte de La Palma, un incendio forestal a una cota de 700 metros aproximadamente sobre el nivel del mar aproximadamente, a unos 6 km al norte del Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos (ORM).
Aunque las observaciones continuaron con normalidad esa noche, se procedió a la evacuación del personal y los observadores al mediodía del día siguiente, de acuerdo con el plan de emergencia del ORM y bajo la eficiente coordinación de la administración del observatorio.
Los ayuntamientos y cabildo de La Palma, el gobierno autonómico de Canarias y varios ministerios del Gobierno de España coordinaron su respuesta al incendio, desplazando a más de 400 bomberos y 11 aeronaves al lugar del siniestro en 24 horas, incluyendo dos unidades militares de emergencia con base en Canarias y tres hidroaviones y varias brigadas desde la Península.
Gracias a esta respuesta eficaz, el incendio se consideró estabilizado el lunes 24 de agosto, y las observaciones astronómicas pudieron reanudarse en la noche del 25.
Los vientos predominantes del sur, aunque evitaron que el fuego se aproximara al observatorio, provocó, sin embargo, que el fuego se extendiera a las zonas vecinas de Las Tricias y Santo Domingo, causando la destrucción de viviendas y vehículos pero sin lamentar daños humanos o del ganado.
El personal del ING desea unirse al IAC y otras instituciones del ORM para expresar su solidaridad con quienes han sido afectados por este incendio y nuestra más sincera felicitación a quienes lograron el control del incendio tan rápidamente.
