Initial action by Telescope Operator

  1. Handover the telescope to the Telescope Operator (TO) normally takes place at 1600 Local Time. By then the TO will have read the white board in the coffee room (first floor) to find out who is the Support Astronomer (SA), and who the observers are. He should find out whether the SA will be present on the mountain that night, and in any case contact him, perhaps at dinner, to discuss any particular problems which are to be expected.
  2. The telescope should be found in the following state after the DT checks:
    1. Power to both Telescope and Dome on. (Section gif)
    2. Telescope Control program running. (Section gif)
    3. Oil pump and air compressor on. (Section gif)
    4. Encoder Zeroset complete.(Section gif)
    5. Emergency Stop activated.
  3. Inspect the telescope logbook (on the Control Desk) for the most recent information about the condition of the telescope. Further information may be found in the INT\?BEWARE leaflet, which must be kept with this manual in the Control Room.
  4. Note that the T/S DOME STOP button is illuminated, indicating a stationary telescope.
  5. Make the ICONA Meteorological Station readings (Section gif), but only if this does not interfere with observing or the taking of calibration data during twilight. Further, read the rain gauge if there has been any precipitation during the last 24 hours.
