Acceptance testing

For software delivered to ING we break down the types of test into two broad categories:

• Functional tests - tests designed to verify and validate the detailed functional behaviour of the delivered software system.
• Acceptance tests - tests designed to verify and validate the sustained integrated use of the delivered software system by either an astronomer or an engineer at the telescope (according to the user requirements); and tests designed to verify and validate the maintainability of the delivered software system (with reference to ING requirements).

We expect the funtional tests to be designed and used by the software development team during the development exercise, and that these tests are documented and delivered as part of the software system. These tests include unit (or module) tests, subsystem tests and system tests - where appropriate. On delivery, these tests may be performed in part or in full by LPO software staff as part of the acceptance exercise.

We expect acceptance tests to be designed and documented by LPO software staff, with reference to the user requirements, and that they will normally be performed during commissioning. The design of these tests will normally begin once a detailed design is available and they will be designed to reflect the continued integrated use of the software system in an operational environment. In addition, a maintainability audit of the delivered software system will also be performed. This audit will test the use of ING guidlines for maintainability provided to the developers during the development phase. Any tools used for the maintainability audit will be available to developers during the development process. The acceptance tests will be fully documented in the Software Acceptance Test Plan and made available to the development team for pre-delivery system testing.

A report of the results of the software acceptance tests, the Software Acceptance Test Report, for the system will be prepared either during commissioning or immediately after by a member of the ING software staff. This report will uniquely identify the circumstances and nature of each non-conformity (either to the user requirements or existing ING software requirements) or software failure. Software non-conformities or failures which are severe enough to affect the successful functioning of the delivered system may result in a recommendation that the software system not be accepted for operational use at ING until further development work has been carried out. Corrected software will, as a minimum, successfully complete a sub-set of the functional and acceptance tests.
