INT Duty Tech Notes for the sparc based ICS and DAS

This gives brief notes about the new ICS system:

Starting up and shutting down the system

For the Instrument control to be carried out by the Sparc, the switch box next to the engineering PC must be in the appropriate positions. Note cables for the PC have been removed for the Sparc to be used. These can be re-inserted for engineering control. To start the system up, log into the system computer (lpss12 ) as observer, using the password on the front of the computer. Then enter the following two commands:

to load the correct observing system and patches

to start the system - takes a minute or so.

Before any of the CCD commands are accepted the setup_ccd command must be entered, (eg setup_ccd tek3)

To Shutdown just enter the following command before logging off:

This removes all the tasks - takes 30s or so

Data review

Once an image has been taken with the "run" command, it can be checked with IRAF as follows:

  1. Log on to lpss13 with the "dutytech" account.
  2. Start an xgterm and ximtool - either from the mouse or: xgterm & ximtool &
  3. type cl in the xgterm to start iraf
  4. type ing in iraf to load the ing package
  5. Go to a scratch directory eg: cd /scratch/lpss13a/dutytech
  6. epar das_get Enter the source directory for the fits files as given by setup_ccd command. Enter ":g" when complete. (Subsequently just entering "das_get last" will convert and display last image.)
  7. imexam Quick look at image: single key commands available in the ximtool window: "l" line plot, "c" column plot, "m" for box stats, "j" gausian fit for FWMH, "q" to quit and return to iraf.
  8. Exit iraf by typing log
  9. Exit xgterm and ximtool windows

Recovery

If the system seems to be behaing badly, try the following until it works:

  1. Shut the observing system down and startup again: shutdownobssys startobssys
  2. Shut the observing system down, log off, log back in and start the observing system shutdownobssys (Exit openwindow and log back in as observer) icsobssys startobssys
  3. Shutdown the system computer details given in this procedure,

System overview

The Sparc system computer is connected to the CCD controller and IDS and AGB MMS (controllers) via RS232 serial ports. The wires leave the Sparc from the 8 way serial port pack (known as the magma card) sticking out of the back. The AGB and IDS wires go to the switch box next to the engineering PC. The Serial port to the Pekin Elmer TCS (the infamous IPL - InterProcessor Link) goes via a remote serial port server, in the clip centre, below the Mirror Support PC. If the power to this is cycled, the System computer Sparc will have to be rebooted - following instructions in how to recover the portservers. There is a switch box to select whether this IPL goes to the Sparc system computer or the old Perkin Elmer system computer. Clearly this should be set to Sparc.
