INT DAS Shutdown Procedures

There are three procedures, one to shut down the lpss12 computer only, another for the other sparcs/alphas and a procedure to shutdown all the computers in the INT.

To powerdown lpss12 only This must be done whenever lpss12 needs to be rebooted.

To shut down lpss13, lpss7 or lpas3 only

To shut down the whole system Useful for a UPS shutdown, etc.

Unix computers (eg Sun sparcs) must never be turned off - always follow the procedures - otherwise disk corruption can occur.

Because the DataCell card driver has a bug the DAS computer lpss12 must be turned off at the mains whenever it is rebooted.

The DEC Alpha lpas3 (TCS) is in the clip centre and does not have a shutdown account - contact jmb@ing.iac.es for details.

There is a bug in the Digi Portserver software that prevents the port server being automatically re-initialised if the Portserver is switched off. Either reboot lpss12 completely or follow this procedure to restore the Portservers.

The sparc mains switches are located at the back right hand side top. They can be switched on by this button or the keyboard key top right marked with a circle and vertical line.

Note that lpss13 needs lpss12 running for its shut account to work.

To powerdown lpss12 only

  1. Shutdown lpss12 by logging in as user shut and using the usual password.
  2. Wait until shutdown is complete and you get the OK prompt.
  3. Poweroff lpss12 using the mains switch at the back.
  4. Switch off the two Digi Portservers. One of these is located on the telescope at cass (marked Cassegrain Terminal Server) the other is located in the clip centre (marked Clip Centre Terminal Server).
  5. If rebooting it is not necessary to power off the disk drives and DAT tapes. These should be switched off before moving the computer.

To powerdown single computer eg lpss13, lpss7 or lpas3

Note: The DEC Alpha lpas3 is in the clip centre and does not have a shutdown account - contact jmb@ing.iac.es for details.
  1. Shutdown the sparc by logging in as user shut and using the usual password.
  2. Wait until shutdown is complete and you get the OK prompt.
  3. If rebooting it is not necessary to power off the sparc.

If necessary then power off the sparc using the mains switch at the back and switch off the disks and DAT tape drives.

To shut down the whole system

  1. Power off lpss13 using the powerdown a single computer procedure and switch it off and the disk and DAT drives.
  2. Power off lpss7 (and /or any other Sparcs in the Control room) using the powerdown a single computer procedure and switch it off and the disk and DAT drives.
  3. Power off lpas3 (located in the clip centre) using the powerdown a single computer procedure and switch it off and the disk and DAT drives.
  4. Power off lpss12 using the powerdown lpss12 only procedure and switch off the disks and DAT drives.
  5. Switch off the VME autoguider (located in the clip centre).
  6. Switch off the two Digi Portservers. One of these is located on the telescope at cass (marked Cassegrain Terminal Server) the other is located in the clip centre (marked Clip Centre Terminal Server).
  7. Switch off the fox rack in the clip centre (above the autoguider VME).
