INT/JKT - reading the catalogue tape on the Perkin-Elmer TCS
Gary Mitchell 09-APR-1997

Loading the exabyte

The exabyte drive is on top of the TCS. Because the drive is used infrequently it is often switched off. Switch on the drive and wait patiently for for both lights to go out (about 2 minutes). Open the drive door and insert tape. Close door and wait for the green light to come on (about 1 minute).

If there are problems loading tape then power cycle the exabyte drive when it is empty and try again. If the problem persists contact any member of the Computing Facilities Group. or send mail to the Computing Facilities Group helpdesk

Using the Perkin-Elmer COPY program

In the control room find the terminal labelled "TCS console" and shut down the TCS interface program with the command

* finish

Now start the program which allows logins on the terminals

* startmtm

Go to the usual TCS user interface terminal and log in using your initials (xxx in example below)

SI XXX,255,MANAGER

If you used composed your tape using a VAX/VMS system as described in the instructions for writing an exabyte on a VAX/VMS system then you should have accepted the option to have instructions sent to you as a mail message. You will need these instructions. Display the instructions on the nearby sparc terminal or print them out from mail.

If you used composed your tape using a sparc as described in the instructions for writing an exabyte on a unix system the you do not have customised instructions. Please use one tape for each file and the following simple instructions

Simple Instructions for reading a single file from a tape on Perkin-Elmer

* set pr 0
*
* xallocate myfile.cat,in,80
* load copy32
* start
> input exab:,80/100
> output myfile.cat
> copy *,myfile.cat
> end

Do not forget to remove your tape and turn off the exabyte tape drive.

Re-starting the Perkin-Elmer TCS system
