Observers should make up a catalog of their targets before their run and transfer it first to a VAX on La Palma. This can be done by e-mail or ftp. The catalog must be in the format
SO xxxx R hh mm ss.s D dd mm ss EQ Beeee
The format is described in more detail in the telescope manuals. Observers may prefer to divide their targets into several catalogs.
The TCS for the JKT is in the room opposite the front door. The TCS for the INT is in the "Clip Centre" one floor down from the control room. The TCS for the INT and JKT each have a single exabyte drive.
To prepare your exabyte tape first find an exabyte drive connected to a sparc. There are some in the WHT terminal area adjacent to the WHT control room.
Log onto the sparc (use lpss1 or lpss2) Set your current directory to the directory where the catalog disk files are located and give the command
% dd if=argfile of=/dev/nrst1 cbs=80 conv=block obs=8000where argfile is the name of your unix file.
To keep the instructions for reading the tape on the Perkin-Elmer simple please use one tape per file.
If you have multiple files and using dozens of tapes is impractical then contact the CFG two working days before observing or use the instructions for Transferring Catalog files from VAX/VMS system to Perkin-Elmer TCS to write all the files to one tape and receive automatically by mail customised instructions for reading the tape on the Perkin-Elmer TCS.
