4.2.1.2 Using GIFs stored locally

The icons and buttons which are transmitted from the BSCW server to your local computer system make the BSCW user interface attractive, but consume bandwidth. To reduce your dependence on the communication infrastructure, you may download the many small GIF icons and buttons once, enter the path of the local 'bscw_icons' directory in your 'Edit preferences ...' form, and tell BSCW to make the URLs of these GIF files point to your local file system. From there, your Web browser retrieves them faster and more cost-effectively than from the BSCW server.

If in your organization many colleagues on the same Local Area Network access a remote BSCW server, you may reduce cost and improve performance by making the BSCW icons available to all users on a server in your LAN -- please consult your system administrator.

• Download one of the archive files that contain Icons and user interface extensions from your BSCW server or from http://bscw.gmd.de/DownloadGoodies.html;
• Extract and Save All directories and files;
• Click [Edit Prefs] in the footer of a Folder page;
• Click    in the top button bar of the 'Edit preferences' form;
• In the 'Edit more preferences ...' form, mark the checkbox to the left of

Get icons from URL:

• Enter the directory path and
• Click

to make BSCW use the locally stored icons.

Note:

If your browser does not find the GIF files locally, BSCW becomes pretty cumbersome to work with. You will see that immediately when your Web browser displays a Folder page.

Open the 'Edit more preferences ...' form again. Correct the error in the directory path or de-select the checkbox for using locally stored icons. Then click

to restore a complete user interface.
