Starting the mechanism control database

There are two methods for starting the software. The first, in use at the time of writing, is most appropriate during the development and commissioning phases. The second should be used when the NAOMI system (and software) is stable and in normal use. The method listed last on this page is, in practice, what this second method should amount to.

Startup procedure during development
1. Ensure that the NAOMI mechanism control VME crate is switched on and running, that the correct VME cards are installed and that the control electronics is functioning.
2. telnet or rlogin to the NAOMI mechanism control vxWorks system. At the time of this writing, the system is located at naomiomc.ing.iac.es
3. At the vxWorks console, use the vxWorks bootChange command to check that the vxWorks system is configured with the correct host name, target name, IP addresses etc. These parameters should not, under normal usage of NAOMI, require alteration. See the vxWorks documentation if changes are required.
4. Use the bootChange command to check that the system will use the correct startup script. You expect to see the following line:
```
startup script (s)     : $naomi/naomiMechs/bin/mv167/startup_minimal 
```
  where $naomi should reflect the (actual) top level NAOMI software directory. Modify this line if this is not the case.
5. If any vxWorks startup parameters were altered in steps 3 or 4, type reboot to reboot the crate with the new parameters. You will be required repeat step 2.
6. When you regain the console, the NAOMI epics system can be started up by typing
```
< startup_mechs
```
  You should see output on the console as vxWorks loads the required files and initialises the EPICS application.
During normal operation, you would expect to execute only steps 1, 2 and 6.

Standard startup procedure
1. Ensure that the NAOMI mechanism control VME crate is switched on and running, that the correct VME cards are installed and that the control electronics is functioning.
2. telnet or rlogin to the NAOMI mechanism control vxWorks system. At the time of this writing, the system is located at naomiomc.ing.iac.es
3. At the vxWorks console, use the vxWorks bootChange command to check that the vxWorks system is configured with the correct host name, target name, IP addresses etc. These parameters should not, under normal usage of NAOMI, require alteration. See the vxWorks documentation if changes are required.
4. Use the bootChange command to check that the system will use the correct startup script. This will be the full startup script in this case, not the _minimal version. You expect to see the following line:
```
startup script (s)     : $naomi/naomiMechs/bin/mv167/startup_mechs 
```
  where $naomi should reflect the (actual) top level NAOMI software directory. Modify this line if this is not the case.
5. If any vxWorks startup parameters were altered in steps 3 or 4, type reboot to reboot the crate with the new parameters. You will be required repeat step 2.
6. When you regain the console, the NAOMI epics system should be up and running.

During normal operation, if the vxWorks system is using the startup_mechs script as specified in the standard startup procedure, the vxWorks system will startup the NAOMI EPICS system immediately after switching on or reboot. If you are confident that the system is starting up reliably, there is no need to use the vxWorks console at all, as just powering up the VME crate should be sufficient start the software. In order to use the EPICS software, there is no requirement to be (or remain) logged on to the vxWorks system. In normal use, access to the software will be through the DM screens described here. Therefore:

Standard startup procedure (expected)
1. Switch on the NAOMI mechanism control VME crate.
