Introduction
This page is part of the ING manual WHT-INGRID-2:
INGRID IMPB Software Operations Manual
Purpose of the Document
This document is the operations manual for the INGRID "Implementation
B" (IMPB)
Observing System.
The term Observing System refers to the software system which
facilitates all aspects of infrared observing with INGRID. This includes:
-
positioning and offsetting the William Herschel Telescope (WHT).
-
positioning the instrument's mechanisms (filter wheels, pupil stop wheel,
focus drive and pupil imager).
-
acquiring data from the instrument's infrared detector array.
-
combining telemetry information from the various telescope and instrument
susbsystems with data from the detector array to build the (FITS-compatible)
observational data files.
IMPB is the observing system currently (10/11/00) used for observing with
INGRID in its Cassegrain configuration. It should not be confused with
ULTRADAS, the observing system required when observing with INGRID in GHRIL
(in conjunction with the NAOMI adaptive optics system).
This document is intended to provide guidance for all users of the INGRID
Implementation B Observing System including:
-
Visiting Astronomers
-
the ING Operations Team (who verify the instrument's correct operation
during their daily
checks).
-
the ING Detectors Group who monitor the performance of the 'Hawaii' infra-red
detector array, at the heart of INGRID.
-
Duty Engineer's who may wish to use the section on troubleshooting
if things go wrong.
The document is NOT intended to provide hints and tips on how to get the
best out of INGRID from an astronometrical perspective. A separate manual
is available for this on the INGRID web pages.
Using this Manual
This manual has been designed primarily as an online reference guide, compatible
with any standard HTML browser. As such it is not designed to be read cover
to cover.
Visiting astronomers are invited to read the sections on "Observing
with INGRID" and "Observational
Data Format" before they arrive, then to dip into the "Command
Dictionary" as and when required.
The Operations Team should refer to the section on INGRID's "Daily
Checks".
The Duty Engineer may wish to refer to the section on troubleshooting
if things go wrong.
