1. Introduction
Purpose of this document

This document is intended to provide information to members of the software group, electronics group and detectors group on how to use the SLO software test system.
2. Hardware Requirements
A minimum of 3 computers are required for the SLO software test system. However as this is a test system the configured system is likely to change over the course of time. The current configuration is described in the SLO Software Test System document.


• sloics Computer


This computer is the Instrument Control Computer for the SLO test system.


• slodas Computer


This computer is the Data Acquisition Computer for the SLO test system.


• slotcs Computer


This computer is the Telescope Control Computer for the SLO test system.
3. Software Requirements
• Operating System


The Operating system is Solaris and the current configuration is described in the SLO Software Test System document.


• Observing System


The observing system is modeled on a released observing system, however the released version is defined as 'latest' instead of S8.3 or s7-1 etc.
4. Operations
• Logging in


The system has been designed to be as flexible as possible and allows the user to log in remotely to use the system from any Xterminal, SUN console or PC (which is using Exceed under Windows or Linux).

Login to the ICS computer (host-name sloics) as the slo observer, the user id is "sloobs" and the password is similar to that used on the telescope observing systems. Ask any member of the software staff for assistance if you have problems.

The desktop provided after login is CDE and has 6 Virtual Windows (ICS, TCS, DAS, Configure, TEST and DOCS).



Items may be selected from the Workspace Menu which is available from the background by depressing the right mouse button when the mouse pointer is over the background image. The SLO Observer menu has several pop-up menu items which will be described latter.
• Starting the DAS system


Select the DAS virtual window on the CDE panel. Using the Workspace Menu from the background select the item "SLO Observer" -> "Start DAS Window". Select the correct DAS machine for your tests. A window will appear with the title "Data Acquisition System" on the DAS machine required. send the command obssys and select the required option from the supplied menu.

To start the system use the startobssys command.

The example given shows the WFC DAS being started.
• Starting the TCS system


Select the TCS virtual window on the CDE panel. Using the Workspace Menu from the background select the item "SLO Observer" -> "Start TCS Window (slotcs)" A window will appear with the title "Telescope Control System -slotcs" on the TCS machine. You will have to login to the DEC VMS system to start the TCS.

The Username is dependent on which telescope you wish to simulate ie wht_login, int_login or jkt_login. Use the correct password for the telescope user you have selected.

After logging in it is neccesary to set the DISPLAY variable to have the TCS windows displayed on the correct display. Select the OPTIONS menu and from this menu select DISPLAY. Give the IP number or full address for the display you are using.

Repeat this for the TCS USER window display IP number. The TCS is started in simulate mode this is done from the OPTIONS menu, select the SIMULATE option

The TCS info and user windows should now be displayed.
• Starting the ICS system


Select the ICS virtual window on the CDE panel. Using the Workspace Menu from the background select the item "SLO Observer" -> "Start ICS Window (sloics)". A window will appear with the title "Instrument Control System - sloics" on the ICS machine. You will now have to set the environment DISPLAY variable to the display screen you are using. Send the command obssys and select the required option from the supplied menu.

To start the system use the startobssys command.
• Stopping the DAS system


Select the DAS virtual window on the CDE panel. The DAS window should be available, if not start DAS window and select the correct option from obssys. Run the shutdownobssys command to close the DAS down.

The example given shows the WFC DAS being stopped.
• Stopping the TCS system


Select the TCS virtual window on the CDE panel. On the TCS USER window select TCSEXIT to stop the TCS system.
• Stopping the ICS system


Select the ICS virtual window on the CDE panel. The ICS window should be available, if not start a new ICS window and select the correct option from obssys. Run the shutdownobssys command to close the ICS down
• Using the test portserver


A Digi Portserver is available at the SLO to connect rs232 serial instrumentation to the test system. The Portserver name is portdba.ing-slo.iac.es. After connecting the hardware to the correct rs232 port a tip session may be started by using the Workspace Menu. From the background select the item "SLO Observer" -> "SLO Tip Session Port 0x" where 0x refers to ports 01 - 04 and is the rs232 port the instrument is connected to at the portserver.
