All accommodation and meals will be paid by the attendees. We will cover the cost of the arranged transport (see below).

Transport

Transport on 30th and 31st October has been arranged as follows, please be on time. If your trip or accommodation doesn't fit into this plan, please contact weave_inauguration_loc@ing.iac.es with your arrangements, if you haven't yet. 

30 October

Bus 1 - Only those staying in ORM overnight.

Itinerary: Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa-ORM Residencia-ORM Visitor Centre-WHT-ORM Residencia.

13:30. Departing from Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa in Los Cancajos.
14:45. ORM Residencia (those staying overnight can check in).
15:15. Departing for ORM Visitor Centre.
17:45. Departing for WHT.
20:00. Departing for ORM Residencia.

Bus 2 - For those staying at sea level.

Itinerary: Hotel Parador-Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa-Avenida Los Indianos-Hotel Castillete-ORM Visitor Centre-WHT-Hotel Castillete-Avenida Los Indianos-Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa-Hotel Parador.

13:30. Departing Hotel Parador in Breña Baja.
13:45. Departing from Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa in Los Cancajos.
13:55. Avenida Los Indianos in Santa Cruz de La Palma (pick up point for those staying at Hotels Galeón and San Telmo).

13:15. Departing for ORM Residencia.

Wifi

Please note that use of the wifi network at the WHT is restricted given the large number of expected users. 4G mobile network coverage is fine in the WHT dome.

Weather and safety

ORM observatory is located 2400 metres above sea level, please wear appropriate clothing and note the following:

• temperature in daytime: 10-15 degrees.
• temperature at night: 5-10 degrees.
• relative humidity: 10-30%
• temperature at the WHT dome: 5-10 degrees.

To be delivered and paid for at the WHT, right after the inauguration ceremony, prices below. Possibility of paying using credit card, bizum or cash. Please contact weave_inauguration_loc@ing.iac.es before Thursday 26th October if you wish to place an order. Include your name, menu and quantity.

Registration

If you are planning to attend the WEAVE Inauguration Event and if you haven't registered yet, please do so as soon as possible. The registration deadline is 30th September.

Accommodation

Please see below important information regarding accommodation. All bookings should be made and paid directly by the attendees.

Staying at sea level:

Santa Cruz de La Palma (or just 'Santa Cruz') is the main town on La Palma, and it's where the ING sea-level office is situated. It takes 1 hour to reach Santa Cruz de La Palma from the observatory, and 10 minutes from the airport. Los Cancajos (Breña Baja) is a beach resort between Santa Cruz de La Palma and the airport, and it's only five minutes away from both locations. Our accommodation recommendations are listed below:

If you plan to sleep at the Observatory on Monday 30th, and have not booked your room yet, we strongly recommend you to do so at the link below at the earliest opportunity.

Transport

A return trip to sea level by bus will be offered on the inauguration day. For those staying at the ORM Residencia, we will accommodate a trip from and to sea level once we know the travel details of each attendee, either by bus or taxi (both free). The journey takes about one hour and 15 minutes from the airport, and one hour from Santa Cruz de La Palma.

It is a pleasure for the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes to announce the inauguration of WEAVE, the new multi-fibre spectroscopic facility for the William Herschel Telescope.

The WEAVE Inauguration will take place on

Monday 30 October 2023

at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) on the Island of La Palma.

We would be very pleased if you attend the event to share this moment with us.

Those of you who are Agency Representatives, please consider giving us the names of officers in your organisation whom you would like us to invite.

We are planning a simple ceremony on Monday 30th afternoon, in the WHT dome as well as at the new Visitor Centre of the ORM, followed by evening witnessing of WEAVE observations and stargazing, weather permitting. Staying Monday night at the ORM Residencia is a good option for those coming from beyond the Canaries. For those staying overnight, optional visit to other ORM telescopes will be organised for Tuesday morning. A science outreach talk and other cultural events are being planned for Monday and Tuesday of that week.

Especially for those coming from the Continent, consider arriving the weekend before to enjoy the nice La Palma autumn.
