This section is intended as a very brief introduction to the PE text editor, just to get you started. For full details of commands the reader is referred to section 3 of the Perkin Elmer OS/32 EDIT User Guide, which can be found in the documentation bay in room D102 (to be reached via room D101) on the first floor of the INT building. To enter edit mode, type on the operating system prompt:-
EDIT FILE.EXT (extension `.FTN' is assumed if none is specified)
EDIT is essentially a line editor and puts you into 'insert' mode upon entry. Hit twice Return to get out of it.
Table lists a number of useful commands and their function.
In the commands `range' is of form `n-m' for line n
through m; if no lines are specified,
the current line is taken; `range n-' stands for line n to
end of file.
Miscellaneous Notes
Use SAVE to store an edited file on disk (but stay in EDIT).
Use END to leave EDIT. Beware: do SAVE first, if not done before.
Use DONE to SAVE and EXIT.
HELP * gives a list of edit commands.
HELP MNEMONIC gives short description command MNEMONIC.
To CONCATENATE files A,B,C using the editor (see table ):
BIOC mode (see OS/32 EDIT User Guide, section D-1) enables editing with a cursor. One may, or may not, find this more convenient than simple line editing in NOBIOC mode. Default mode is BIOC, i.e. cursor editing.
If you `break' out of ADAM, you can only type single line commands, so you cannot use EDIT while running ADAM. The only way to edit while running ADAM is to sign on to another System Console, using another account.
