La Palma 2008 international time - BAL QSOs

Back to BAL QSOs project home page.

Our proposal 'The nature of quasar outflows' was awarded 33 nights La Palma international time during Jan - Jun 2008. Organisational information is summarised on this page, under the headings:

The observing plans for each of the 5 projects envisaged, and records of observations and data reduction carried out so far, are on separate pages:

The ITP sample (samp1) of SDSS DR4 QSOs is tabulated here. The table shows which telescopes were used to observe each QSO.

Note that this sample differs from the samples selected for observation with radio telescopes (and TNG?).

Projects / Time awarded

We requested time for 5 specific BAL-quasar projects, listed below (with abbreviated titles) in the order they appear in Section 5 of the proposal:
BAL-QSO projectTime requested (nights) Time awarded (nights) Time observed (nights) Project leader
1Distance of outflow from nucleus, LK 5 WHT/ISIS G/B3 ISIS G/B 2B Nahum
2Physical conditions in BAL 5 WHT/ISIS D 4 ISIS D 4D Chris
3Radiative acceleration / line-locking 6 WHT/ISIS G/B 3 ISIS G/B 2B,1G, poor seeing Chris?
4Variation of absorber depth with time 12 NOT/ALFOSC D/G/B12 NOT/ALFOSC+INT/IDS 2D,4G INT; 1D NOT Chris
" " 4 Mercator/MEROPE4 Mercator/MEROPE 2.3 "
5Why are radio-loud BALs rare? 7 TNG/NICS B 7 TNG/NICS B 5.0 Ignacio

i.e. we got what we asked for, apart from one dark (D) ISIS night and 5 of the grey/bright (G/B) ISIS nights, which mainly reduces the amount of time available for projects 1 and 3.

Column 5 shows the time actually obtained on sky, i.e. 23/33 nights (3 of these in poor seeing). The remainder were lost to bad weather.

The 33 nights break down by telescope and phase of moon as follows:

WHT42410
INT3418

TNG-247
Mercator--44

* Project numbers (1 - 5) as listed in the section above.

wji = Ian Skillen (ING), who will stand in for me to provide ISIS support Jan 6.
sb = Sarah Barker (ING), who will assist with some of the runs, as part of her 1-year undergraduate training here.
jd = Jay Dunn, visiting from Virginia Tech.

See the table at the top of the page fro a comparison between the numbers of nights awarded, and the number of clear nights observed.
