Support

PI's are requested to examine the schedules well in advance of their run, and contact their Support Astronomer for advice on planning observations and instrumental/detector setup. Please inform your Support Astronomer of who will be carrying out the observations for your programme. Note that inexperienced observers, for example untrained students, must NOT be sent alone to make the observations.

CAT, NL and UK observers should be aware that there are override programmes active in this semester which could affect your programme. A summary of these override programmes and the procedure by which they are triggered and carried out is given at:

http://www.ing.iac.es/Astronomy/observing/overrides.html

Observers are reminded that INT Wide Field Camera runs have Telescope Operator (TO) support for the first two nights only, and that the JKT is a single-user telescope without TO support. Experienced INT IDS observers may also be asked to limit their TO requirements to the first two nights.

Observers bringing visitor instruments should allow enough time after the run to supervise packing of their equipment. ING will allocate a contact person who will verify the contents and address to which the equipment is to be sent. A Contents Verification Form should be attached to each package/box being shipped from the ING (details).

Travel and Accommodation

Travel and accommodation on La Palma can be arranged through the booking form. It is the observers own responsibility to arrange the travel to La Palma. For further information, please refer to the travel section.

Computing Services

A Solaris guest account and laptop network access are provided by default. For any additional computing requirements (e.g.if you are bringing your own instrumentation and computers, or you require additional guest accounts), please complete the Computing Services Request Form for Visiting Astronomers. Information on available software for reducing/analysing data while at the ING can be found on the Astronomy Software pages.

Visitor Programme

We now run a full seminar and visitor programme, and we invite all CAT, NL and UK observers to spend some time before or after their run at the ING sea-level office in Santa Cruz to give a seminar on their research or instrumentation work. Such a visit may also allow discussions of your run with, for example, your Support Astronomer. We have office and computing facilities for visitors, and a good library, so you can start reducing your data or read up on those journals of the past months. ING may well be able to cover your extra costs if your observing grant does not; just ask the Seminar Organizer, Johan Knapen (knapen@ing.iac.es), when you contact him to set up your visit. The sea-level office is located in Edificio Mayantigo, close to the harbour in Santa Cruz de La Palma ( picture, map).

Visiting astronomers are invited to submit short articles with scientific highlights achieved with the ING telescopes to the ING Newsletter. Submissions deadlines are 15 July and 15 January. Please contact Javier Mendez (jma@ing.iac.es).

Public Understanding of Science at ING

ING carries out several Public Understanding of Science activities (see our Public Information web pages for more details). Producing astonishing, colourful astronomical images is one of our current projects, and you might be interested in joining while observing on La Palma.
