The
system computer
This page is part of the ING manual INS-DAS-29
Operations manual for UltraDAS.
The system computer in an ING observing-system is the machine that
coordinates operations on other computers. Typically, the observer logs
on to the system computer to run the system.
At the INT
The current system computer is a SPARC Ultra 10: lpss7. It lives
in the control room, on the observer's desk.
The system runs the various user interfaces to the observing system.
Because of the large area of GUIs, the computer has two screens.
Part of the instrument-control system runs on the system computer. To
support this, the machine runs two kinds of serial connections:
-
Physical connections to IDS and the Cassegrain A&G box come from ports
at the back of the computer.
-
Virtual connection to the WFC and autoguider computer are carried over
Ethernet to terminal servers ("Portservers") in the CLIP centre and on
the telescope.
At the WHT
The system computer for UltraDAS is a SPARC Sun Blade 2500: taurus.
It is built into the observer's desk, in the control room.
The system runs the various user interfaces to the observing system.
