Use case: inspect observations

Purpose: to confirm that the system is working correctly; to confirm that the observations are producing useful data.

Actors: observer or DE or change-crew member.

Outline: the system displays each observation as it is recorded. The user views this display and can also execute limited analysis on the observation.

Typical course of events:
User action System response
1. User asks the system to start its image display (typically a CIA start-up script asks on behalf of the user). System starts ximtool or a similar IRAF-style image display. System provides an xgterm window for line graphics and IRAF commands (this window is independent of the system-control windows and might be on a separate screen).
2. A observation is recorded by the DAS. System detects the new observation and displays it within 10s of the observation completing. If the observation is imaging (as opposed to spectroscopy), the display has an overlay showing approximate celestial coordinates.
3. User views the new observation in the display and investigates it with IRAF tools. System allows normal IRAF operations on the file but will not let the user write processed data alongside the raw observations. System allows the user to save processed data in a scratch directory.
