The ING operates a number of computer systems that require a user name and password. For general use only two of these systems are applicable for which ING staff and ING visitors may request a general Unix account and/or a Microsoft Windows NT account.
The Unix account is used to access any Sun Workstation for services
such as Email and access to the Unix home
directories. On the other hand, a Microsoft Windows NT account
is primarily used by PC users. The NT systems on-site provide access
to printers, shared directories and other resources such as software depositories.
These accounts are independent and the account passwords are not synchronized.
If you have both a Unix password and a NT password then the chances are
the user names will be the same.
If you require either a Unix and/or an NT account, please contact the
CFG.
When you first log in on a Unix system, the working directory, i.e the
directory you find yourself in is your home directory. Your home directory
file system is the top of
your workspace and you can divide your workspace into sub-directories
to order your home directory. To find out your home directory, type
"pwd" just after you log in. Within
the ING, your home directory will usually be /home/username.
You can also refer to your home directory as ``~''. For example, to get a listing of all files in your home directory, type
ls ~
at the command prompt. To get a listing of all files in the home directory of user juan, type
ls ~juan
Similarly, to cd to your home directory, type
cd ~
or simply
cd
at the command prompt.
