Procedure to shutdown VAX-systems.

When you want to shut down the whole cluster, you will need to shutdown all the satellites first. Satellites are the VAX-stations LPVS1 and LPVS3. Satellites  are  nodes  which don't have  their own systemdisk, they boot from a bootnode (LPVF and LPVG). Because satellites are dependent on bootnodes they  have to be shutdown  first, before the bootnodes.

SHUTDOWN

Satellites can be shut down using the SHUT account on any terminal.  Because the consequences of  shutting down a bootnode  are more serious  and given that all the bootnodes LPVE/LPVF  are physically located  in the same room  for these nodes  the SHUT account must be used on the  node's system-console in the computer-area.

Log in as SHUT with password    RELATIV9.

The system will come first with a list of users currently logged in. If there are  any users on the system you should give them some warning  before shutting down the system. It will come  then  with the following dialog,  (defaults are in square brackets) :

Do you wish to continue ? (Y/N) [N] y

SHUTDOWN  -- Perform an Orderly System Shutdown on node LPVX

How many minutes until final shutdown [0] :    <Enter an integer>

Reason for shutdown [Standalone] : <Enter a one-line reason for shutting down the system>

Do you want to spin down the disk volumes [NO]?    <Hit RETURN>

Do you want to invoke the site-specific shutdown procedure [YES]?     <Hit RETURN>

Should an automatic system reboot be performed [NO]?     <By default, the system does not automatically reboot. However,  if you  respond with YES,  the system attempts to reboot automatically when the shutdown is complete>

When will the system be rebooted [later]:     <Enter a text line with the expected reboot time in the format you want  printed in the message that will be broadcast to users.   If you do not know hit RETURN>

Shutdown options (enter as a comma-separated list):

REMOVE_NODE        Remaining nodes  in the cluster should adjust quorum

CLUSTER_SHUTDOWN   Entire cluster is shutting down

REBOOT_CHECK       Check existence of basic system files.

SAVE_FEEDBACK      Save AUTOGEN feedback information from this boot

    DISABLE_AUTOSTART  Disable autostart queues

 Shutdown options [NONE]:

<REMOVE_NODE       You use this always for satellites.  You can use  this  only  on one of the  bootnodes,  the last  two bootnodes  you will need  to specify  CLUSTER_SHUTDOWN  instead otherwise  you loose quorum and the remaining cluster members will hang.>

<CLUSTER_SHUTDOWN  When  you want  to shutdown the whole cluster,  or  when there are only two bootnodes are left.        >

<REBOOT_CHECK      Use always.  >

<SAVE_FEEDBACK     Only useful if the node has been up  for more then   24 hours. >

<DISABLE_AUTOSTART Allows jobs  on autostart queues  to finish processing  before  failing over  or  stopping autostart queues.  >

A message  requesting users  to log out is broadcast at decreasing time  intervals to all users on the system.   All sorts of shutdown-messages will appear on the terminal.   If  you  did  not  request  an automatic reboot,  the following message  appears on the system console:

SYSTEM SHUTDOWN COMPLETE - USE CONSOLE TO HALT SYSTEM

REBOOT

On  bootnodes  you  will  set  the  BREAK ENABLE/DISABLE switch  to the  ENABLE position.  (Switch  is pushed towards  the circle  with  the dot  inside.)   If  you  press  the  BREAK-key  on  the system console you will see the  boot-prompt ( >>> ) Type b, and the system will boot.  Set the BREAK ENABLE/DISABLE switch back to the DISABLE position.  (Switch is pushed towards the circle with the dot outside it.)   When node LPVF has come up, you can do the second bootnode.

After all the boot nodes are up,  you can boot the satellites. Remember   a satellite is dependent  on a specific bootnode so if for any reason a  bootnode cannot be booted  then  neither can  the satellites  which are  dependent on it.

On the back of  the VAXstations,  next to the Ethernet port you  find a tiny square button called the HALT button  (marked with a circle  with triangle inside). When you press it in  (be sure to press it in  far enough) the VAX will issue the the boot-prompt ">>>" on the screen.  Type b, and the system will boot.
