Procedure to shutdown ALPHA-systems.

When you want to shut down the alpha's, you will need to shutdown the TCS first:  
Go to the control-room , find the TCS-terminal and type :

user>  tcsexit

close all the windows and logout.

Make a new connection to the alpha 

Log in as SHUT with password    RELATIV9.

The system will come first with a list of users currently logged in. If there are  any users on the system you should give them some warning  before shutting down the system. It will come  then  with the following dialog,  (defaults are in square brackets) : 

Do you wish to continue ? (Y/N) [N] y

       SHUTDOWN  -- Perform an Orderly System Shutdown on node LPASn

Do you really want to shutdown node LPASn  [NO]?  y

How many minutes until final shutdown [0] :    <Enter an integer>

Reason for shutdown [Standalone] : <Enter a one-line reason for shutting down the system>

Do you want to spin down the disk volumes [NO]?    <Hit RETURN>

Do you want to invoke the site-specific shutdown procedure [YES]?     <Hit RETURN>

Should an automatic system reboot be performed [NO]?     <By default, the system does not automatically reboot. However,  if you  respond with YES,  the system attempts to reboot automatically when the shutdown is complete>

When will the system be rebooted [later]:     <Enter a text line with the expected reboot time in the format you want  printed in the message that will be broadcast to users.   If you do not know hit RETURN>

Shutdown options (enter as a comma-separated list):

    REBOOT_CHECK       Check existence of basic system files.

    SAVE_FEEDBACK      Save AUTOGEN feedback information from this boot

    DISABLE_AUTOSTART  Disable autostart queues

 Shutdown options [NONE]:

<REBOOT_CHECK      Use always.  >

<SAVE_FEEDBACK     Only useful if the node has been up  for more then   24 hours. >

<DISABLE_AUTOSTART Allows jobs  on autostart queues  to finish processing  before  failing over  or  stopping autostart queues.  >

A message  requesting users  to log out is broadcast at decreasing time  intervals to all users on the system.   All sorts of shutdown-messages will appear on the terminal.   If  you  did  not  request  an automatic reboot,  the following message  appears on the system console:

 SYSTEM SHUTDOWN COMPLETE - USE CONSOLE TO HALT SYSTEM

Now the machine can be powered off.

To reboot just power the machine on again.
