Where do you want to modify the files?

• using your PC
• using your unix account on lpss20 at SLO

OK so you want to use your PC to modify the file.

• Connect the following as a network drive to your PC

• ireton:/slb-info/managem
• It is recommended that before you alter the file you make a copy - just in case the edit is incorrect.
• A popular way of labeling a file as a backup copy when only 3-letter suffixes are allowed is to change the suffix to .old

OK so you want to use your unix account to modify the file

• Log in to lpss20 using the username and password of a unix account which is in the group managem
• Use the following to change directory to where these files are located
• % cd /slb-info/managem
• It is recommended that you make a copy of the file before you edit it. Copying the file to a file of the same name but with the character ~ tagged on the end is a popular way of labelling a file as a "backup" copy.

It was not expected that you would want to change these files or it was not intended to allow you to change the files. The following options remain

• apply for membership of the group - perhaps you should be in it. You can either send mail to all members of group managem or send mail to the Computing Facilities Group special address helpdesk. In either case group membership is only approved with the consent of group members.
• ask someone who is in the group to make the modification for you
• take a copy, make the modification and then ask someone who is in the group to make the change.
