ING WIRELESS NETWORKING SERVICE

A WIRELESS NETWORKING service has been installed at the ORM and the SLO. The purpose of this system is to provide wireless network connections for laptops in the main areas within the ING.

The system is based on CISCO and 3COM wireless repeaters installed around the sites.

A list of places proved to be covered is given below.

SITE AREA
WHT Terminal area.
WHT Control room
WHT OPS room
WHT Computers room
WHT Dome
WHT Aluminizing area and test focal station
WHT
Kitchen and 1st floor
INT Control room and dome
RESIDENCIA All the main hall
SLO 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th floors
SLO Meeting room

The wireless connections at the ING run under a security system based on WEP 128bit encryption and MAC addresses registration. There are now two wireless networks at the ING each providing different levels of priviledge.

The table below details the new networks :

Description
ingint
WEP 128 bit
needed
luis@ing.iac.es
Wireless network for ING staff only. Will provide full access to ING computers as well as the Intranet (except port 25 and 465)

Users with WiFi enabled on their personal computers should be able to see the secure wireless network ingint whilst within range of one of the INGs wireless access points. This network is dedicated to  ING staff and with the correct password, allows the user unfettered access to all of the ING network. Users must have the MAC address of their wireless network card registered in the database which CFG maintains as a requirement for accessing this network. The user will also need the password for the INGINT network which can be provided by a member of the computing facilities group.
ingext
WEP 128 bit
needed if working outside the control rooms
luis@ing.iac.es jma@ing.iac.es
Users with WiFi enabled on their personal computers should be able to see the secure wireless network (ingext) whilst within range of one of our wireless access points. It will provide full access to the Internet (except ports 25 and 465) and restricted access to ING computers, for example it will be possible to see the Intranet part of the Web server but not mount NFS partitions.

In order for visitors to have general access to this network, the following conditions must be satisfied :
  • They have registered the MAC address of the wireless network card by completing the ING computing visitors form. If working inside the telescope control rooms this is not strictly needed.
  • They have received the ING visitors pack which contains the password which will allow them to join the INGEXT network.
Should the case arise that a visitor arrives at the telescope who had failed to register his MAC address in advance using the ING computing visitors form, the visitor will still be able to use the wireless network INTEXT if his/her computer is physically located in the INT or the WHT control room. The access points in these locations relax the requirement that the MAC address must be previously registered in the DHCP database.

Even having a registered MAC address, the visitor will still need to use a  password to access the network. This password can be found in the visitors pack or alternatively, the visitor  should be able to get the password from the OSA or the support astronomer.

If the visitor wishes to access the ING network via Ethernet, the user must register the MAC address of his ethernet interface using the ING computing visitors form in advance.

Ports 25 (smtp) and 465 (smtps) are blocked to avoid Spam generation from within the ING.
