Check the following:
- Check that the dome is not vignetting the telescope. The
dome azimuth and telescope azimuth on the telescope status
display should be the same. If not, someone has probably turned
the dome motors off.
- Check that the primary mirror cover is open, and that
the UES Nasymth flat (Nasymth 2 on the engineering console)
has been selected.
- Check the mimic to make sure that the dark slide has been
opened. The dark slide has to be opened manually;
ask your support astronomer or telescope operator.
- Check the mimic to see that the autoguider mirror is in one
of the following positions; CLEAR, POINTSOURCE, SHORTSLIT,
LONGSLIT.
- Check the mimic to see whether the slit shutter
opens and closes during an exposure.
- The echelle gratings have dust covers, which should have
been raised at the start of the observing run. The only way
to check this is by opening up the thermal enclosure, so only try
this after trying everything else first. Only
the support astronomer or duty tech should open up the enclosure.
- Check on the mimic display that the camera shutter is out.
- Check on the mimic display that the interface cover is off.
The interface cover cannot be moved under computer control;
ask your support astronomer or duty tech if it needs to be
moved.
- When using IPCS-II, check that the camera shutter is open, after
resetting following use of the red panic button.
