In light of the points made above and from our 1st-hand knowledge
of the companies we have spoken to and visited we are making the following
recommendations:-
- We procure a wafer run (20 wafers) of Loral
CCDs of
format as soon as possible and in any case before the end of 1993.
These wafers will be thinned and packaged by Mike Lesser at Steward
Observatory and supplied to us as soon as practicable. We hope for
a delivery in the 1st 6 months of 1994. These devices will form the
complement of CCDs destined for imaging applications on the ING
telescopes.
- In parallel with the above, we hope to find enough financial support
to place a contract with EEV to supply a suite of
spectroscopic devices of the
format. As we pointed
out
in the discussion above, this contract may be made in collaboration
with the AAO and Padua Observatory (for the Galileo Telescope,
to be sited on La Palma). We are to test some new EEV devices soon
and would hope these meet our expectations for blue response
and device uniformity. We will be undertaking vigorous discussions
with the above parties to specify our exact requirements for this
contract which we hope would be filled in the middle of 1994.
- We plan to monitor the progress being made by other suppliers -
particularly SITe and Thomson. We would also hope to continue
discussions with MIT/LL regarding a collaborative use of their
devices, most worthwhile for their small format, high-speed adaptive
optics devices.
