Suppose it is desired to observe three objects, as follows:

  1. A star called HD 1234 at RA , Dec +17 14 44.1 at equinox B1950.0 (Besselian). This has annual proper motions of +0.034 secs of time in RA and -0.127 in Dec.
  2. A galaxy called NGC 3456 at RA , Dec -3 7 14 at equinox B1900.0.
  3. A nearby star, to be used as a standard, HD 2345 at RA  Dec -4 5 6 at equinox J2000.0 (Julian).

HD1234 is to be observed first and then the main object will be NGC3456 with HD2345 as the standard.
