Once the control system has been started, check that the lightpath
through the instrument is clear:
- The darkslide should be opened at the start of the night.
This is normally done by the telescope operator. It should be closed
again at the end of the night, to prevent dust entering the instrument.
- Check on the mimic that the interface cover is off - this is a
manually operated safety shutter blocking light to the detector. If it is
not, it will have to be moved manually; the support astronomer should
normally do this.
- The camera shutter should be open. If the 4MS has been reset it
will be closed, in which case type UCAMSHUT OPEN at the ICL prompt.
