The Observation Type is a integer number encoding the kind of
observation, and serves to distinguish between calibration and science
exposures. The archive recognizes roughly 7 different types of observations;
a summary is shown in table 
. The complete list of current
observation types in use can be obtained by using the SHOW command of the
query software (section ).
Occasionally, a new entry may be added to the list (for which there is
ample possibility), for instance if a new instrument uses a specific kind
of calibration exposure. The query software supports a function to search
calibrations for a given selection of observations (CALSELECT, see
section ), which makes use of the observation-type code.
