Logging in

The first thing to do, on aproaching the instrumentation computer is to log into it and start up ADAM.

  1. First, check that the appropriate disk is loaded in the computer. On the 3210 system console type

    D D (and press return)

You will see a list of device allocations. Opposite the disk drive RM5A: you should see the word OBS. This indicates that the disk containing the CCD software is loaded and you may proceed. If not, ask your support astronomer or anyone from the software group to change it.

  2. Check that the system is clear of other users and hasn't got any stray instrument control programs in it. If in doubt ask the software support staff.

  3. Sign on (log in) using the SIGNON command (can be abbreviated to SI). You should have been allocated an account number in the range 1 to 8 (see noticeboard in Control Room for present allocations). If not, ask for help:

    *SIGNON < initials> ,< account no.> ,< account no.>

Any subsequent CCD frames will be called CCD< initials> .nnn where nnn=000 to 999. No more than four initials are allowed. If you encounter any difficulties it may be that the terminal is already logged in to another used. If so, try the command:-

*SIGNOFF (can be abbreviated to SO)

    and retry the SIGNON.

  4. To run the released system type:-

    *ADAM

  5. ADAM should now run up. (If it doesn't check that the OBS disk is loaded and is marked on-line.)

You will now be presented with three menus. For this instrument CCD camera you select Prime focus and CCD.

  6. The system now loads the relevant software for your selection, performs some initialisations (you will need to answer some questions - see next setion) and eventually gives an ADAM prompt:-

Adam:>
