Perseid meteor shower 2005

The images were taken using a Canon 350D digital camera and 8 mm / f3.5 Peleng fisheye lens on static photo mount. The camera was controlled from a notebook computer. The setup was located next to the Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope of the ING on the Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma. The night was mostly clear with a shining Milky Way. There was rather strong wind most of the time but it did not affect observations.

Exposures were of 30 seconds, with an overhead of 3 seconds for image download. The resolution was set 1728x1152 pixels and the images were stored in JPEG format. The sensitivity (essentially gain) was set to 800 ISO. From dusk to the moonset the lens was stopped to f / 5.6 what turned out not to be such a good idea. Afterwards the lens was opened to full f / 3.5.

At least three extremely bright meteors coming from Perseus were detected. One left a trail of smoke which is visible on photos for several seconds. The last one was detected only few images before the end of observations. From all the images an animation was made, the resolution was further reduced. Nevertheless, the file length is still more than 60 MB.
