This webpage contains the Duty Engineer checks that are performed daily whilst AF2 is on the telescope.  The commands that are to be typed at the ICL command line are given after the ICL prompt.

Testing AUTOFIB

1. Waking the robot.
• hh:mm:ss> afwake
• This turns the AF2 power on. At ICL the Autofib mimic will update and all the variables turn green. You should also hear the pneumatic gripper being exercised. If this does not work it is probably either the system is accepting local commands only or the VME needs booting in GHRIL. (See engineering notes for detailed instruction.)
2. Turn on the WYFFOS back-illumination.
•  hh:mm:ss> afbackillum on
• This turns WYFFOS back-illumination. Backillumination sends light from WYFFOS up the fibres to AF2. Also it turns on the TV back-illumination.
3. View a science fibre.
• hh:mm:ss> afviewfibre 15
• This moves the robot gripper camera to the co-ordinates for this particular science fibre. On the Autofib monitor in the control room should be the illuminated fibre. If you see no fibre check on WYFFOS mimic display that backillum is on.
4. View a guide fibre.
• hh:mm:ss> afviewfibre 32
• As above but this checks that the backillumination is on to the guide fibres. NB the illuminated fibre on the TV monitor looks smaller than a science fibre, this is because a mask is in front of it.
5. Load the small fibre module.
• hh:mm:ss> afloadm
• This locates and re-affirms the fibre positions. NB This command turns backillumination ON if it is not already on. This normally takes no more than 10 minutes. No fibres are moved with this command. If it fails to complete go to Autofib engineering notes.
6. Park the AF2 Robot
• hh:mm:ss> afparkr
• This parks the robot to the edge of the fibre field but the power remains on.
7. Move the off-axis mobile probe into the field.
• hh:mm:ss> afmovp 150000
• This moves the off-axis probe. NB the robot must be parked <afparkr> to complete this operation.
8. Move the off-axis mobile probe back to the back position.
• hh:mm:ss> afmovp 0
• This moves the probe to its park position.

9. At TV panel ensure that the gain is off then turn on both Prime and Cass systems. The cass system is turned on only to maintain sync.
10. Turn the AF2 robot inspection lights on.
• hh:mm:ss> aflights on
• This turns the inspection lights on inside the Autofib robot. NB This would damage the TV if the TV was already on and the gain was high.
11. Ensure all domes lights are off. If they are not then they have been overridden. Remove override with key switch before proceeding.
12. Now the dome is dark and Autofib inspection lights are on. Turn on the gain of the prime camera and increase until you see the guide fibres. They are fibre bundles with a fibre in the middle.
13. Turn off camera system ensure the gain is fully down and off.
14. Turn the AF2 robot inspection lights off
• hh:mm:ss> aflights off
15. Sleep the robot
• hh:mm:ss> afsleep
• This safely parks robot out of the field and turns the power off.

This is not a detailed check but proves communications. Moving other things like the grating can disturb the observers set-up.

16. Check WYFFOS filter slide A
• hh:mm:ss> wfilta in
• hh:mm:ss> wfilta out
17. Check WYFFOS filter slide B
• hh:mm:ss> wfiltb in
• hh:mm:ss> wfiltb out

18. Use the wyffos mimic to display corrector element positions.
• hh:mm:ss> adc_auto disable
• hh:mm:ss> adc 90
• hh:mm:ss> adc -90
• hh:mm:ss> adc_auto enable

This assumes UltraDAS is running.

19. Turn lights off in the dome.
20. Ensure Nasmyth Flat is stowed for GHRIL.
21. Setup WYFFOS and take a bias frame.  Type the following command at the observing system prompt.
• SYS> bias wyffos 'test bias'
22. Check bias frame using imexam.

WYFFOS Calibration Unit

This assumes that the WYFFOS calibration unit mimic is running.

23. Select a calibration lamp. the process of doing so will turn it on. For example to turn on the tungston lamp.
• hh:mm:ss> wcal 1 on
24. Select a filter.
25. Select 'broken' on the Nysmith control panel on the telescope engineering desk.
26. Take an exposure with the ccd.  For example type the following at the observing system prompt
• run wyffos 'test tungston'
27. Check that the spectral lines are present on the ccd readout.
28. Select 'GHRIL' on the Nysmith control panel on the telescope engineering desk.
29. Turn the calibration lamp off.
• hh:mm:ss> wcal 1 off

30. Reset the autoguider - ONLY if required, see below for procedure.(not normally done during a check)
31. Check to see if CCD is cooling or cold. If it's not type <start-up>
32. <tv on> check sensitivity to light. Toggle between fields with <fm 1> and <fm 2>. Do not use the <field> command, the system hangs if there is no star.
33. When finished type <tv off>.

34. The latest version of the AF2 autoguiding program is currently on a floppy disk.  Ensure that the AF2 version is in the autoguider disk drive.
35. Reset the Autoguider VME crate.
36. Quickly return to the Autoguider terminal Press <CTRL C> to abort task.
37. Type <insite reload>. This forces the system to boot from the floppy.
38. When prompted select <af2>
