Checking WFS Noise

It is important that, as part of the daily checks, the noise on the NAOMI WFS is measured and compared to its calibrated value.  Follow the instructions to check the WFS noise on NAOMI, remembering to make sure that the lights are switched off inside GRACE.

  1. You will need to log into NAVIS as user NAOMI and to start the TopGui application.  To stat the application type;

naomi@navis> TopGui &

  1. From the 'Tools' menu select 'WFS Control'.  This will make the 'WFS Display Page' appear on the right-hand side.
  2. From the 'Display Control' section click the 'grab' button.  This will grab a WFS image.

  3. Now press the 'Save as FITS' button.  You should see the filename of the FITS image appear below these buttons.

    I.e. FITS file :   20030827-144319.fits.

  4. The fits file will be stored in the '/export/software/Electra-save-dir/Grabs/WFS' directory on NAVIS.
  5. The image can be viewed and examined by using ximtool.
  6. The noise should be around 7.7 ADU (4.3 electrons)
