To Test WYFFOS CCD
Autoguider
These checks should be completed along with the telescope checks and
assume that ICL is up and running and configured for Autofib/Wyfoss. Also
the Autofib/WYFFOS VME and Autofib power supplies are up and running in
GHRIL. (see engineering notes for details on how to boot the Micro's).
The Autofib/WYFFOS observing system consists of the following sub-systems:
-
Autofib Robot & Fibre module [AF2](location: prime focus)
-
Autofib VME/Power amplifier. (location: GHRIL)
-
VT220 engineering terminal. (location: GHRIL)
-
Video Monitors. (location: one in GHRIL, one in telescope control room)
-
Westinghouse TV guide fibre system. (location: telescope top end ring)
-
WYFFOS (location: GHRIL).
-
WYFFOS VME. (location: GHRIL)
-
Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector [ADC] (location: prime focus)
-
Prime Focus Turntable [PFTT] (location: prime focus)
-
CCD Autoguider. (location: Autofib robot at prime focus)
Testing
AUTOFIB
-
At ICL prompt <afwake>. This turns the AF2 power on. At ICL the Autofib
mimic will update and all the variables turn green. You should also hear
the pneumatic gripper being exercised. If this does not work it is probably
either the system is accepting local commands only or the VME needs booting
in GHRIL. (See engineering notes for detailed instruction.)
-
At ICL prompt <afbackillum on>. This turns WYFFOS back-illumination.
Backillumination sends light from WYFFOS up the fibres to AF2. Also it
turns on the TV back-illumination.
-
At ICL prompt <afviewfibre 11>. This moves the robot gripper camera
to the co-ordinates for this particular science fibre. On the Autofib monitor
in the control room should be the illuminated fibre. If you see no fibre
check on WYFFOS mimic display that backillum is on.
-
At ICL prompt <afviewfibre 15>. As above but this checks that the backillumination
is on to the guide fibres. NB the illuminated fibre on the TV monitor looks
smaller than a science fibre, this is because a mask is in front of it.
-
At ICL prompt <afloadm>. This locates and re-affirms the fibre positions.
NB This command turns backillumination ON if it is not already on. This
normally takes no more than 10 minutes. No fibres are moved with this command.
If it fails to complete go to Autofib engineering notes.
-
At ICL prompt <afbackillum off>. This turns the backillumination off.
-
At ICL prompt <afparkr>. This parks the robot to the edge of the fibre
field but the power remains on.
-
At ICL prompt <afmovp 150000>. This moves the off-axis probe. NB the
robot must be parked <afparkr> to complete this operation.
-
At ICL prompt <afmovp 0>. This moves the probe to its park position.
Testing
the Westinghouse TV.
-
At TV panel ensure that the gain is off then turn on both Prime and Cass
systems. The cass system is turned on only to maintain sync.
-
At ICL prompt <aflights on>. This turns the inspection lights on inside
the Autofib robot. NB This would damage the TV if the TV was already on
and the gain was high.
-
Ensure all domes lights are off. If they are not then they have been overridden.
Remove override with key switch before proceeding.
-
Now the dome is dark and Autofib inspection lights are on. Turn on the
gain of the prime camera and increase until you see the guide fibres. They
are fibre bundles with a fibre in the middle.
-
Turn off camera system ensure the gain is fully down and off.
-
At ICL prompt <aflights off>. This turns the inspection lights off.
-
At ICL prompt <afsleep>. This safely parks robot out of the field and
turns the power off.
Testing WYFFOS
This is not a detailed check but proves communications. Moving other
things like the grating can disturb the observers set-up
-
At ICL prompt <wfilta in>. At ICL prompt <wfilta out>. This checks
filter slide A
-
At ICL prompt <wfiltb in>. At ICL prompt <wfiltb out>. This checks
filter slide B
ADC Test.
Use the wyffos mimic to display corrector element positions.
-
At ICL prompt <adc_auto disable>. This allow you to move the elements
manually
-
At ICL prompt <adc 90>
-
At ICL prompt <adc -90>
-
At ICL prompt <adc auto_enable>
WYFFOS Calibration
Unit
This assumes that the WYFFOS calibration unit mimic is running.
-
Select a calibration lamp. the process of doing so will turn it on.
-
Select a filter.
-
Select 'broken' on the Nysmith control panel on the telescope engineering
desk.
-
Take an exposure with the ccd.
-
Check that the spectral lines are present on the ccd readout.
-
Select 'GHRIL' on the Nysmith control panel on the telescope engineering
desk.
-
Turn the calibration lamp off.
To Test WYFFOS
CCD
This assumes DMS and sparc real time display is running.
-
Turn lights off in the dome.
-
Ensure Nasmyth Flat is stowed for GHRIL.
-
At ICL prompt <setup wyffos>. Default setup is usually OK
-
At ICL prompt <bias wyffos>
-
Check bias frame.
Autoguider
-
Reset the autoguider if required, see below for procedure.(not normally
done during a check)
-
Check to see if CCD is cooling or cold. If it's not type <start-up>
-
<tv on> check sensitivity to light. Toggle between fields with <fm
1> and <fm 2>. Do not use the <field> command, the system hangs if
there is no star.
-
When finished type <tv off>.
To reset the autoguider, if required:
-
The latest version of the AF2 autoguiding program is currently on a floppy
disk. Ensure that the AF2 version is in the autoguider disk drive.
-
Reset the Autoguider VME crate.
-
Quickly return to the Autoguider terminal Press <CTRL C> to abort task.
-
Type <insite reload>. This forces the system to boot from the floppy.
-
When prompted select <af2>
