AF2/WYFFOS Daily Duty Checks.

1.    Testing AUTOFIB & Westinghouse TV.

2.    Testing WYFFOS
3.    ADC test.  Use the wyffos mimic to display corrector element positions.
4.    To test WYFFOS CCD
5.    WYFFOS Calibration Unit.
6.    Autoguider
These checks should be completed along with the telescope checks and assume that ICL is up and running and configured for AF2/Wyfoss. Also the AF2/WYFFOS VME and AF2 power supplies are up and running in GHRIL. (see engineering notes for details on how to boot the Micro’s).

NB ITALICS INDICATE KEY STROKES.

The AF2/WYFFOS observing system consists of the following sub_systems

Autofib Robot & Fibre module. AF2. (location prime focus)

AF2 VME/Power amplifier. (location GHRIL)

VT220 engineering terminal. (location GHRIL)
TV Monitors. (one in GHRIL one in telescope control room)
Westinghouse TV guide fibre system. TV. (location telescope top end ring)

WYFFOS (location GHRIL).

WYFFOS VME. (location GHRIL)

Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector. ADC. (location prime focus)

Prime Focus Turntable. PFTT. (location prime focus)

CCD Autoguider. (location AF2 robot at prime focus)

WYFFOS CCD. (location GHRIL)

1.    Testing AUTOFIB & Westinghouse TV.

1.1    At ICL prompt >AFWAKE.  This turns the AF2 power on. At ICL the AF2 mimic will update and all the variables turn green. You should also hear the pneumatic gripper being exercised. IF this does not work it is probably either the system is excepting local commands only or the VME needs booting in GHRIL. (See engineering notes for detailed instruction.)

1.2    At ICL prompt >AFBACKILLUM ON.  This turns WYFFOS back-illumination. Backillumination sends light from WYFFOS up the fibres to AF2. Also it

1.3    At ICL prompt >AFVIEWFIBRE 11.  This moves the robot gripper camera to the co-ordinates for this particular science fibre. ON the TV in the control room should be the illuminated fibre. If you see no fibre check on WYFFOS mimic display that backillum is on.

1.4    At ICL prompt > AFVIEWFIBRE 15.  As above but this checks that the backillumination is on to the guide fibres. NB the illuminated fibre on the TV monitor looks smaller than a science fibre, this is because a mask is in front of it.
1.5    At ICL prompt > AFLOADM.  This locates and re-affirms the fibre positions. NB this command turns backillumination ON if it is not already on. This normally takes no more than 10 minutes. No fibres are moved with this command. If it fails to complete go to AF2 engineering notes.
1.6    At ICL prompt > AFBACKILLUM OFF.  This turns the backillumination off.

1.7    At ICL prompt > AFPARKR.  This parks the robot to the edge of the fibre field but the power remains on.

1.8    At ICL prompt > AFMOVP 150000.  This moves the off-axis probe. NB the robot must be parked (afparkr) to complete this operation.

1.9    At ICL prompt > AFMOVP 0.  This moves the probe to its park position.

1.10    At TV panel ensure that the gain is off then turn on both Prime and Cass systems. The cass system is turned on only to maintain sync.

1.11    At ICL prompt >AFLIGHTS ON.  This turns the inspection lights on inside the AF2 robot. NB this would damage the TV if the TV was already on and the gain was high.

1.12    Ensure all domes lights are off. If they are not then they have been overridden. Remove override with key switch before proceeding.

1.13    Now the dome is dark and AF2 inspection lights are ON. Turn on the gain of the prime camera and increase until you see the guide fibres. They are fibre bundles with a fibre in the middle.

1.14    Turn off camera system ensure the gain is fully down and off.

1.15    At ICL prompt >AFLIGHTS OFF.  This turns the inspection lights off.

1.16    At ICL prompt> AFSLEEP.  This safely parks robot out of the field and turns the power off.

2.    Testing WYFFOS

This is not a detailed check but proves communications. Moving other things like the grating can disturb the observers set-up

2.1    At ICL prompt> WFILTA IN.  At ICL prompt> WFILTA OUT.  This checks filter slide A

2.2    At ICL prompt> WFILTB IN.  At ICL prompt> WFILTB OUT.  This checks filter slide B

2.3    At ICL prompt> WCAL 1 ON.  This turns the calibration lamp on. Check it changes state on the WYFFOS mimic.

2.4    At ICL prompt> WCAL 1 OFF.  This turn calibration lamp off.

3.    ADC test.  Use the wyffos mimic to display corrector element positions.

3.1    At ICL prompt> ADC_AUTO DISABLE.  This allow you to move the elements manually

3.2  At ICL prompt> ADC 90

3.3  At ICL prompt> ADC -90

3.4  At ICL prompt> ADC_AUTO ENABLE

4.    To test WYFFOS CCD

(assumes DMS and sprac real time display is running)

4.1    Turn lights off in the dome.

4.2    Ensure Nasmyth Flat is stowed for GHRIL.

4.3    At ICL prompt> SETUP WYFFOS Default setup is usually OK

4.4    At ICL prompt> BIAS WYFFOS (Check bias frame on SRTD)

4.5    At ICL prompt> WCAL 1 ON

4.6    At ICL prompt> GLANCE WYFFOS 200

4.7    At ICL prompt> WCAL 1 OFF

5.    WYFFOS Calibration Unit.

6.    Autoguider

NB. If you have to re-boot the autoguider the latest version is currently on a floppy disk

6.    Re-boot required (If system is up and running go to 5.15)

6.1.    Reset Autoguider in rack. Quickly return to the Autoguider terminal

6.1.2    Press >CTRL C to abort task.

6.1.3   >Insite reload.  This forces the system to boot from the floppy.

6.1.4    When promted select >AF2

6.1.5    Check to see if CCD is cooling or cold if its not type >Start-up

6.1.6   >TV ON check sensitivity to light. Toggle between fields with FM1 and FM2. Do not use the Field command the system hangs if there is no star. When

finished type >TV Off.
