Autofib 2/WYFFOS Telescope Instrument Setup Procedure

Section 7 : AF2/WYFFOS Daily Duty Checks

This webpage contains the Duty Engineer checks that are performed daily whilst AF2 is on the telescope.  The commands that are to be typed at the ICL command line are given after the ICL prompt.

Testing AUTOFIB

  1. Waking the robot.
  2. Turn on the WYFFOS back-illumination.
  3. View a science fibre.
  4. View a guide fibre.
  5. Load the small fibre module.
  6. Turn off the backillumination
  7. Park the AF2 Robot
  8. Move the off-axis mobile probe into the field.
  9. Move the off-axis mobile probe back to the back position.
Testing the AG heads used for acquisition and guiding

You should see the ten fiducial bundles now

  1. To test AG2 make sure the mobile probe is in the field
  2. Take a 1 second exposure with AG2

The mobile probe should be illuminated now

  1. Sleep the robot
  2. Take a exposure with wyffos on taurus

Testing WYFFOS

This is not a detailed check but proves communications. Moving other things like the grating can disturb the observers set-up.

Note: make sure after you issue a wfilt command you wait until it completes the filter movement and the focus adjustment before giving the next command. Otherwise the focus correction will not be aplied correctly

  1. Check WYFFOS filter slide A
  2. Check WYFFOS filter slide B
ADC Test.
  1. Use the wyffos mimic to display corrector element positions.
Testing WYFFOS Calibration Unit

This assumes that the WYFFOS calibration unit mimic is running.

  1. Select a calibration lamp. the process of doing so will turn it on.
  2. Select a filter.
  3. Select 'broken' on the Nysmith control panel on the telescope engineering desk.
  4. Take an exposure with the ccd.
  5. Check that the spectral lines are present on the ccd readout.
  6. Select 'GHRIL' on the Nysmith control panel on the telescope engineering desk.
  7. Turn the calibration lamp off.
To Test WYFFOS CCD

  1. Turn lights off in the dome.
  2. Ensure Nasmyth Flat is stowed for GHRIL.
  3. Setup WYFFOS and take a bias frame.
  4. Check bias frame.
With the daily duty checks complete the last set of checks have to be done by the astronomer, see section 8.
