AF2 and WYFFOS Daily Duty Checks
Any errors or suggestions please email to

The following commands that are to be typed at the ICL command line,
are given after the ICL prompt.
Testing AUTOFIB
- Waking the robot.
- 14:01:00 > afwake
- This turns the AF2 power on. At ICL the Autofib mimic will update
and all the variables turn green. You should also hear the pneumatic
gripper being exercised. If this does not work it is probably either the
system is accepting local commands only or the VME needs booting in
GHRIL. (See engineering notes for detailed instruction.)
- Turn on the WYFFOS back-illumination.
- 14:02:30 >
afbackillum on
- This turns WYFFOS back-illumination. Backillumination sends light
from WYFFOS up the fibres to AF2. Also it turns on the TV
back-illumination.
- View a science fibre.
- 14:03:00 >
afviewfibre 15
- This moves the robot gripper camera to the co-ordinates for this
particular science fibre. On the Autofib monitor in the control room
should be the illuminated fibre. If you see no fibre check on WYFFOS
mimic display that backillum is on.
- View a guide fibre.
- 14:05:30 >
afviewfibre 32
- >. As above but this checks that the backillumination is on to the
guide fibres. NB the illuminated fibre on the TV monitor looks smaller
than a science fibre, this is because a mask is in front of it.
- Load the small fibre module.
- 14:06:30 > afloadm
- This locates and re-affirms the fibre positions. NB This command
turns backillumination ON if it is not already on. This normally takes
no more than 10 minutes. No fibres are moved with this command. If it
fails to complete go to Autofib engineering notes.
- Turn off the backillumination
- Park the AF2 Robot
- 14:21:30> afparkr
- This parks the robot to the edge of the fibre field but the power
remains on.
- Move the off-axis mobile probe into the field.
- 14:25:00 > afmovp
150000
- This moves the off-axis probe. NB the robot must be parked <afparkr>
to complete this operation.
- Move the off-axis mobile probe back to the back position.
- 14:27:00 > afmovp
0
- This moves the probe to its park position.
Testing the AG heads used for acquisition and guiding
- Turn off all dome lights
- Turn the Wyffos calibration lamps on.
- 14:30:00 > wcal 2 on
- This turns a neon lamp in the calibration unit on
- Take an 1 sec exposure with AG1 (autoguider)
You should see the ten fiducial bundles now
- To test AG2 make sure the mobile probe is in the field
- Take a 1 second exposure with AG2
The mobile probe should be illuminated now
- Sleep the robot
- 14:34:30 >afsleep
- This safely parks robot out of the field and turns the power off.
Testing WYFFOS Spectrograph and CCDThis is not a detailed
check but proves communications. Moving other things like the grating can
disturb the observers set-up.
Note: make sure after you issue a wfilt command you wait until it completes
the filter movement and the focus adjustment before giving the next command.
Otherwise the focus correction will not be aplied correctly
- Check WYFFOS filter slide A
- 14:36:00 > wfilta in
- 14:38:00 > wfilta out
- Check WYFFOS filter slide B
- 14:40:00 > wfiltb in
- 14:42:00 > wfiltb out
- Make sure the Nitrogen flush for the CCD window is switched on
(especially in winter with humid conditions) Open epics engineering consul
and switch LN2 flow on.
- Switch neon lamp on
- Take an exposure with wyffos on taurus
- Sys >run whtwfc 10
- Display in DS9 and analyse with Iraf to see whether there are
arclines visible
- Switch calibration lamps off
- Take a bias frame with wyffos on taurus
- Sys >bias whtwfc
- Display in DS9 and analyse image and check the noise
Testing the ADC.
- Use the wyffos mimic to display corrector element positions.
- 14:44:00 > adc_auto disable
- 14:47:00 > adc 90
- 14:50:00 > adc -90
- 14:53:00 > adc auto_enable
