Saving and Restoring the RAM DISK

Restoring RAM DISKS

If the RAM disk becomes corrupt or you would like to remove some changes to it, you should follow this procedure:

1. Switch off controller and connect the SCSI disk rack to the back.
Note: Any Forth SCSI rack with an INSITE drive can be used - there is one dedicated for this purpose, but the DMS, TV and Autoguider racks can be used just as well.

2. Switch on SCSI rack first

3. Then switch on CCD controller. If the controller locks up as it loads the RAM disk the reboot the controller, pressing control C as soon as you see the ImageForth banner - ie before the RAM disk is loaded.

4. Put the 3.25" floppy from the front of this folder into the Insite drive - as backup copy is available from the WHT CCD instrument specialist.

5. type INSITE 1 LIST - this displays the instructions and locations of the backup for each CCD. Note down the start block for your detector.

6. Using the number specified type:
no RESTORE-EEPROM
Note since Version 3.0 of the application - RESTORE-EEPROM has been available without loading it from the disk.

7. Reset the controller, and check the code gets recomipled correctly - and check SEE comes up with the correct detector name, and the network name is correct.

8. Switch off CCD controller and remove SCSI rack, switch CCD controller back on, Reset the DICI on the DMS.

Saving RAM disks

If you modify the RAM disk - then it is important that these changes are saved on a floppy.

1. Turn off controller and connect SCSI disk rack. Turn on SCSI rack and then CCD controller

2. At terminal - check the controller has booted up and the RAM disk is not corrupt.

3. Type INSITE 1 LIST  and find a suitable place for the blocks - there is no need to overwrite the old copy of the RAM disk - you may wish to return to it.

4. Type:   INSITE 1 DRIVE  no. SAVE-EEPROM   Where "no." is the block number selected above.

5. Reboot controller and check all is functioning as before.

6. Power off CCD controller then power off and disconnect the SCSI rack and power up the CCD controller again.

7. Reset the DICI on the DMS.
